Property Assessments in Fairfax County

With around 341,000 homes in Fairfax County how many assessors are employed by the county? Does the county hire outside firms to assist with the assessments?

Is building quality a big factor in determining the property value? Along with current market sales. Would building an addition to one's home without a permit probably increase the value of a house? (I.e.Boarding house)

Are there outside firms that perform audits on assessments? Virginia state law that requires this to be done?

How dare you question the Kingdom of Fairfax. We tell you what to pay and you pay it. End of story.

I don't know. Good questions though I'll be interested to hear the answers.

I think that building an addition without a permit has other problems, especially when you go to sell. That aside, if you have a problem with you assessment, you can appeal the decision.

Do you really think that know one is watching? One phone call from stay at home nosey~Nancy, or the common place "county inspector drive by" and you will have a stop work order w/ penalties. Do it right and the value of your home will increase. Why do it the wrong way? Is it at the corner of Stupid St & Stupider Way?

Its not my house. Noticed a home in neighborhood had no permits posted but looked to be building a 2000sf addition out back. Suspect the house is being used as a boarding house judging by the large number of cars parked in the driveway. Or they're all related wink wink

I called area supervisor office about it and my impression was "Oh well that's the way the cookie crumbles" La dee dah!

If a supervisor's office doesn't give a shit why would the county government give a shit?

Perhaps try calling the media?

Interesting especially since Fairfax County has a well-known reputation for being very aggressive regarding the enforcement of building permits. Whether its tree houses in yards or unauthorized additions to houses, FFX county inspections have led to some fairly well known incidents to include the use of bulldozers in response to noncompliant homeowners.

As far as the "cookie crumbles" comment, I suspect you simply spoke to the wrong office or the wrong person.

Suggest you go this web site and fill out the form.

Search by address to see if they do/don't have an active permit:

Click on "Permit Status" "by Address"

I am a person of honor. Never troll unless.... Hate what the county has turned into. I'm trying to move away in the next year(thank gawd) but have a few relatives left in area.

I don't have energy to deal with media and the circus that local news has turned into. Hope some young crack reporter sees an opportunity

Do you work for the county?

btws, spoke to head of office

Don't think that your neighbor not having a building permit is breaking news.
