LORTON, Va. (AP) -- Metro is breaking ground on a major new bus facility in northern Virginia.
The transit agency is preparing to begin construction on its new Cinder Bed Road Metrobus facility in Fairfax County on Monday. Metro says the facility will help serve newer buses for nearly 20,000 riders and will generate 300 construction jobs. It will also allow for redevelopment of a site in Old Town Alexandria.
The Cinder Bed Road facility in Lorton will replace Metro's nearly 70-year-old Royal Street Bus Garage in Alexandria. Officials say the Alexandria facility has become outdated and can't accommodate newer buses. So most buses from the Alexandria site are at least 13 years old.
Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff, Metro General Manager Richard Sarles and area lawmakers are scheduled to join the groundbreaking.
