So is becoming a police officer difficult?
Always thought this would be an exciting job.
so how would one pursue career? Being 20 and all.

Educate yourself. Any or some college helps, Military background helps, no criminal record or DUIs, don't smoke pot or do drugs, quit smoking if you smoke currently, good driving record, etc...

You should get a job with VSP!
You get paid better and all you have to do is sit on the highway and give out tickets all day and then go home and drive your beamer

I am not totally clear on the OP's intentions... he asked what it takes to become a police officer, and asked it in the Fairfax forum, but I'm not sure if he means specifically that he wants to join FCPD.

Things you can do now include keeping your record clear.

If you want to be a FCPD cop, then be prepared to be a cop somewhere else (probably in a large city) before coming to FCPD.

Maybe try DC or Baltimore first... I wouldn't say lower standards but it's much easier to get in if you are a minority..

Lower pay too...I think FFX pays pretty good.

If youre looking in northern va no department will hire you without a college degree unless you have military experience.

lie

But let me tell you about FCPD recruitment. Yes, the job is listed as open until filled on the county website but there are over 3,000 applications on file pending review and the Criminal Justice Academy runs two sessions per year (average) with about 20 recruits per session. There is a new session about two months into training now and selection for the next session is going to fill up quickly because 7 cadets who were being let go were forced into the current class...guess what that does to the budget for next session? 7 fewer spots. Don't give up on applying to the FCPD, but don't be disappointed if you are immediately rejected after the pre-screen form.

So is becoming a police officer difficult?

-No, any uneducated college dropout can become one.

Always thought this would be an exciting job.

-Its mostly paperwork.

so how would one pursue career? Being 20 and all

-Being 20 and all you should go to college. If you've already dropped out of college, try again.

If you are 20 you can still apply. You just have to turn 21 prior to graduation from the academy.

Minimum qualifications are totally irrelevant when it comes to being hired as a police officer. These jobs are extremely desirable and there is typically 100 applicants for every job opening. You take the test and get on a waiting list with 3,000 names. Maybe if you are lucky you will get called for an interview 2 years later. If you really want to be a police officer apply to very large urban departments like Baltimore which have low moral or a really small rural department with really low pay.

You might want to get a phoney badge and some blue/red lights for your car. You can practice pulling over cute females and pretend to write them tickets. Or you can drive around your neighborhood looking for hoodies. It's valuable experience and will put you at the head of the class.

Pretty much the reasons others gave, but I know two guys who wanted to be FCPD cops, and positions are hard to come by and they are picky. If you have good experience you are much more likely to get a spot. A friend planned to be a NYC officer before applying for anything back home in Fairfax Co.

No its not a lie if you dont have a college degree and or previous military or police experience you have no shot in any northern va agency. They have far more applicants then they could ever higher. They arent picking a random person with no college or experience over those that do

Yeah, that's what we need... another Fairfax cop. :\ Prepare for an overall boring, underpaid and hated life. Also prepare for Fairfax brainwashing into the ticket money-making machine.
