Since when did it become acceptable to just close major highways and interstates to do some paving?

THIS IS NOT PLANNING IS STUPIDITY! THE HIGHWAY DEPT NEEDS SOME SERIOUS READJUSTING STARTING WITH FIRING THESE IDIOTS!

FUCKING INSANE!

I've fired off about 30 emails to various county board members and even my congressman and senators.



ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Drivers in Maryland and Virginia are warned to avoid parts of the Capital Beltway this weekend, beginning Thursday night, because of planned construction work.

Officials at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project say the construction work will occur on the beltway's inner loop, also designated as I-95 and I-495 South. Planners expect delays to back up beyond the Wilson Bridge itself well into Maryland.

Weather permitting, crews will reduce the thru lanes on the beltway's inner loop to one lane between the Wilson Bridge and Telegraph Road. By Friday night at 8 p.m. all of the thru lanes on the inner loop will be closed and are expected to remain closed until Monday morning.

The closures are needed for paving work.

There are ways of paving lanes of highways that don't require shutting down the entire highway. Especially a six lane interstate that is a North South corridor route for East coast traffic between Maine and Florida.

That would be nice if that was the truth but I was stuck in that shit for over 3 hours because only one local lane was one. Apparently the highway department can't read their own press releases. I agree with the original poster, fire the person who was managing that VDOT operation.

One nice part of the cluster fuck was I saw a bunch people driving on the shoulder with flashers trying to sneak around people. Two Maryland cops stepped out on the shoulder and nabbed all ten of them in a row. As I was sitting beside them in traffic I could hear the State trooper ripping them a new one for using the shoulder and then she took all their licenses to ticket them.

Well yeah the local lanes are only one lane until this weekend, when they close down to be repaved.

@snake - yeah..well, it's been under construction for the last decade so it's not like it should be a real surprise to you a lane might be closed, yknow?

He asshole, obviously you weren't stuck in this mess Saturday night around 7PM. YES local lanes were open, but it funneled 4 lane highway to single lane to get you on to the local lane. I was stuck in this bullshit, 1 hour to go 5 fucking miles. Don't think the "opened" local lanes makes everything ok. Worst thing is, there was no construction being done. Just 5 big ass dump trucks sitting idle with the lights on.

I was thinking the same thing. The OP must not drive that part of 495, because there are local lanes and thru lanes. As for people bitching about it, it's not like you weren't warned and it's not like you don't have options to go around it.

I've been stuck on 495 at night when they close down most (or sometines ALL) the lanes and the notion of "local lanes being open" doesn't mean squat. How is re-routing a decent volume of traffic going 60-70mph on a major hiway through small one and two lane roads even presented as an alternative? If you were sitting on the beltway for an hour to go 2 miles you wouldn't think so.

When they started this project I remember the DOT saying traffic wouldn't be affected during rush hour....guess what they didn't tell us is we would be screwed during other time.

What kinda dipshit response is that? OF COURSE traffic will be screwed during "other time", "other time" is not rush hour! What time do you propose they work?

Traffic is a complete disaster on the Beltway at night, the worst part is you never know when the lanes are going to be closed down coming in from MD. I dont know why you people are trying to justify these construction assholes, but the situation sucks.

Well until new asphalt comes out of the ground like grass, take a look at vamegaprojects.com before you go through a known work zone.

@snake - It's like these ppl are seriously thinking "Geez, Why cant VDOT just use their damn Time Turner and fix the road already" o_0

On Sunday night (around 8:30pm) there were two lanes blocked on 66 and exit 60 too! I understand having to close one lane, but to close an exit?? If it needs to be done, shouldn't they do it later? I can only imagine how closing all lanes will inconvenient so many people.

@ALE - if they do it later.....................well then how do you think that's gonna effect what time they open it back up in the morning. And if they dont open it back up LATER in the morning...............well doesnt that just mean the ENTIRE construction project goes on A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME?

edit - in other cities they've been known to yeah just SHUT DOWN the entire fucking highway so I'd relax a bit........

LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR... I WAS IN THE "LOCAL LANES." BOTH THRU LANES AND LOCAL LANES WERE BLOCKED.

What made the situation worse was that I didn't even see any paving going on in the "thru lanes." About 6 guys sitting around either eating or having some type of conference. Motorists stuck were flipping them off and yelling shit at them.

Traffic was backed up into Maryland for about 12 miles and it took me three hours to cross the bridge.

I wouldn't be complaining if work was going on or maybe they had traffic stopped for a short while. It was as if they just said throw some cones across the road because we don't give a fuck, we're not in the traffic, time to eat dinner.

Everyone here is thoroughly warned about construction, for christs sake i cant make it through a morning/afternoon commute without a radio commercial talking about beltway closures on the weekends. unless ur deaf, blind and slightly retarded, you should know theyre gonna close it. Im assuming most of u are

XM Has a traffic channel for Baltimore/DC/Atlanta. If it was a significant enough backup they would have mentioned it on the baltimore report AND DC report. XM is no excuse for ignorance.

@snake - dont bother - if they havent noticed that part of the Beltway's been under construction since the TURN-OF-THE-MOTHER-FUCKING-CENTURY........... then I dont think a traffic report is really gonna help them, y'know

@3Hour-if yr too stupid to plan AHEAD for the trip (i.e know that there's gonna be construction on yr route, etc.) then yr the one with the probs, not me.

@Ale - you know, that is the biggest pain in the ass in the world. You get on the highway, or you pass the last exit RIGHT BEFORE THE BACKUP and the signs never tell you "BACKUP AHEAD" they'll just say "HOV" or whatever when I know the same place the program the signs to say shit is the exact same place all the cams hook up at (it's near the Pentagon) so the ppl there know what's going on, right?
