Speeding tickets in Northern Virginia - 10 mph above posted speed?

What is your experience with speeding tickets in Fairfax County and Northern Virginia? Most people say the Police do not issue speeding tickets until you are cruising at least 10 or more mph over the speed limit.

Has anyone received a speeding ticket for 5-9 mph over the limit?

I think 10 over youre ok as long as you sorta tap the brakes if you see a cop.

I got pulled for 19 over and the guy was cool and knocked it down to 9 over.......I didn't argue

Depends on where you are. Cruising down 66 or the beltway at 15 over I don't even bother to tap my breaks when I pass them and I've never been ticketed at those speeds. Over the years I've gotten several tickets on those roads that were written as 17 over but the cop was giving me a break in those cases.

On most other roads 10 over is no problem unless there is a specific condition.

As a general rule, if you get a ticket for going less than 10 over then it most likely means that you did something to piss off the cop and that was the only thing he could find to write you a ticket for.

Fairfax County PD spells this out in their General Orders, stating:

"Because conditions vary with each roadway and the primary purpose of radar/LIDAR is to cite the more flagrant violator, no motorist should, under normal circumstances, be cited for violations under 10 mph beyond the posted speed limit. Tolerance levels, over and under the minimum, may only be set by the station commander based on circumstances of a specific location."

If for some reason you are pulled over for less than 10 mph over the limit, this document won't help a bit in court. And it only applies to Fairfax County, not the many other police forces in the area.

when the FCPD puts out those radar sign units , the numbers on it will stay steady until you are 10 over the limit. Only then will they start to flash at you and say "SLOW DOWN"
