Does anyone have any recommendations on which places will give you the best trade-in value?

I'm looking to trade in a 2008 Nissan Frontier SE 4x4, crew cab, long bed. 55k miles.

Go to Carmax and get their quote - you then have 3 days to shop it at other dealers.

Ideally there has to be a dealer that just offers a fair price and barely looks at the trade in. Half the time they aren't keeping it anyway. Make sure it has all the doors still attached and give you book value.

Why lose thousands for a little convenience?

Sell it yourself. Vehicles like that are hot, especially with Mexicans, etc. It'll sell in hours for retail price or more. A lot of people are buying new these days because used prices are so high now.

Sell it yourself or through a used car dealer's consignment program.
