The Post's recent editorial regarding Fairfax County Schools Superintendent Jack D. Dale's contract was dead-on. I was one of the school board members who was not so inclined to support renewing a four-year contract for Mr. Dale. Time has a way of making one scrutinize the issues and weigh all the variables.

In the span of a month, I found out that several of our older elementary schools within the Beltway have done so well that they have closed the achievement gap, to such an extent the term "gap" no longer applies. In our high schools, 550 more advanced placement exams were completed this past year than in 2008. Most surprising, among the nation's 20 largest districts, none came within 20 points of Fairfax County's average SAT score.

Regarding the complaints on this contract: I have received about eight e-mails of canned text from parents representing special-interest groups, such as Fairgrade and the Fairfax County Coalition for Advocates for Public Schools. These parent advocates have lost sight of the purpose of our jobs, which is to make sure our students leave our system with the ability to move on toward employment or further education. This can be done only with a superintendent who values school administrators, teachers and parents, and makes a priority of student learning and achievement.

Lake Braddock is a nice school, more modern and polished than many of the others.

Hayfield parents do not want South County students in their school, so the school board builds a new middle school. A county wide boundary study should have been done and that would have fixed all the problems. But thank All the parents and school board for not doing that.

Westfield High School, with the exact same design as South County,manages to hold 3200 kids with over 20 trailers (albeit with an addition). Meanwhile South County has only 2900 kids. Just put more trailers.

I am sure the TJ parents are just thrilled that "Selfish Lizzie" bumped Tj back on the CIP so she can get her stupid middle school.

At some point, SB members have fiscal responsibility for spending the limited amount of money for renovations. Taking money away from TJa community that has been patiently waiting- is just a crappy thing to do.

My girlfriend forgot her roots too. Cost me $120.00 to get that shit corrected.

The reason the "gap" has "disappeared" and the test scores have shot up to the moon is really quite simple.

MOST OF THE KIDS WHO CAN'T PASS THE SOL DON'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.

If you are going to be a School Board rep, at least do your homework before you look foolish.

Let's look at Hutchison Elem School:

350 students in grade 3-6 (those who SHOULD take SOLs)
69 students took VGLA instead of SOL (20%)
VGLA pass rate 100% (PERFECT SCORE!)

What impact did that have on test scores for this school?

2006-07 Pass rate was 66%
2008-09 Pass rate was 90%

Amazing! The gap is gone! The ESL kids are doing as well as the kids who have no language problems. The Special Ed kids have inproved their scores by 38 percentage points in just 3 years!

South County was one of only a few FCPS high schools without a single National Merit Semi-Finalist this year. Hayfield had two. What's up with that? If we have to keep paying for new schools for Liz and her pals while WSHS crumbles, at least they should deliver the goods.

Maybe Selfish Lizzie could build a new Taj Mahal Admin Building over in South County. Than her South County empire would be complete.

I would think Westfields High School ought to be getting angry that she is going to build yet another building over by Liberty Middle. It just never stops.

The parents that count (the ones in her district)...like her and vote for her. Have you no clue how the political process works?

I don't care for Charlie Rangel, but I can't vote him out, because I live in Va...and he represents a district in NY. See how it works now?

Lizzie is supposed to embrace the fiscal discipline that defines her Republican Party-unfortunately she does not. And her actions harm EVERYONE.

Sure, go ahead, and applaud her efforts at getting a middle school built (cha ching $60 million plus interest) and her FAILED attempts at buying Gatehouse 2 for the politboro (cha ching $100 million plus interest),but the day of reckoning has come.

All that spending that YOUR neighborhood enjoys will now hurt kids throughout the school district.

Unless the brilliant people at South County Middle School Solution Group have an idea on how to plug the $200 million deficit next school year.
