Fairfax County Health Department Trains for Dispensing of Medical Countermeasures
The Fairfax County Health Department will be conducting a Public Health Emergency Response exercise on Saturday, June 25 to test the agency's ability to coordinate the distribution and dispensing of medical supplies and countermeasures at multiple sites. This exercise builds on lessons learned from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic response and provides health department staff and Medical Reserve Corps volunteers with critical hands-on training opening multiple Points of Dispensing.
While the health department has successfully operated mass vaccination clinics at the Fairfax County Government Center, the June 25th exercise will evaluate its ability to coordinate multiple dispensing sites simultaneously, which may be required during a future influenza pandemic or bioterrorism event when it would be necessary to dispense vaccine or antibiotics to a large segment of the population.
The health department is partnering with Fairfax County Public Schools, Office of Emergency Management, Police Department, Fire and Rescue Department and Department of Transportation as part of the community's on-going commitment to improve readiness for all types of emergencies. The exercise is made possible through a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) grant.
