If they close down the libraries, where will you find a computer to use?

Is this about defending Libraries or Library staff?

If only the people who work their asses off in the endless array of stores & restaurants littering town could whine about their pay and every little thing like the librarian's do. You ladies have the easiest job in all of Northern Virginia. I bet you treat the staff at Mcdonalds like low-lives too when, you go into to get your small cheeseburger with a coupon...

YES! WE MUST SAVE THE LIBRARIES RIGHT NOW OR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WILL HAVE NO PLACE TO ACCESS THE INTERNET FOR FREE! THE HORROR!

Seriously, this is 2013. Why the hell do we still need to be spending so much money on libraries? The library is a relic from that past that will become increasingly more irrelevant in the next 5-10 years. Its a bad investment.

It is reasonable if applied reasonably. If, suddenly, people had to pay for libraries, would it not then be reasonable for any kid wanting to play sports to pay for that too? And that includes the cost of these turf fields, lights, buses and so on.

Sure, eventually booster organizations would spring up, but they should all be subject to a charge for administering the money.

If the County were to choose this model, it should also lower taxes considerably, as they might be shocked to see what the distribution of users to services ends up looking like.

Why should I pay for the homeless to use the library for internet access and a shelter? We have other places which are less of a cost burden to tax-payers for these uncouth individuals.

Library's have no practical place in society, especially in Northern Virginia, home to many technical companies.

The libraries must be defunded. We've got so many undocumented immigrants waiting for taxpayer-funded luxury housing, and not enough Class A facilities to offer them. Libraries will not benefit the illega...er, undocumented people as much as free tennis courts, swimming pools, and valet parking will.

Fairfax library's have become a playground for the mentally disabled and children. Disfunctional , with this totally ruining the ability to go into the library's and utilize it's amenity's. All the bleeding heart liberals have finally destroyed the conception of the library. It was and is supposed to be a place where peace and quiet ruled so anyone could enjoy reading a book, get on the internet and be able to utilize , and enjoy them in peace and quiet. Nowadays , this is just impossible!

I say Fuck The Library!

Maybe if libraries started scanning ID's at the door like they do in clubs- they could easily keep out the riff raff (who tend to have FAKE id's)- this will keep them OUT!!!

Of course, all under 18 can pass no questions asked.

Yes, if kids want to play sports they should pay for that too. And if this was the case there would probably be no unnecessary frills like turf fields or lights unless those involved were willing to pay for it themselves.

Robbing your neighbors to subsidize YOUR lifestyle is not the way a civilized society should function.

Its always hilarious how hostile the libs get when anyone suggests they take responsibility for their own lives. Terrified someone might upset the gravy train.

I think the library is important...lets force EVERYONE to pay for it!

Just because its my kid you expect ME to pay for them?...that's absurd!

My kid wants to play soccer...YOU should pay for their equipment and a lighted astroturf field!

My kid's school needs new computers...lets steal more $$ from our neighbors to pay for it!

I want to whore myself all over town...YOU need to pay for my birth control!

I was an irresponsible jackass and didn't use the birth control. Now I want an abortion...I should get it for FREE!

And so on...

As an ex-bookseller (online only) I can tell you that Fairfax County exlibrary books are typically in very good condition. Any bookseller would be eager to sort through and purchase or take these away for free. Let alone the many homeschoolers and individuals who cannot afford to buy books for their collection.

While most exlibrary books are well worn, soiled and generally unwanted by the public, Fairfax County's exlibrary books are in what most booksellers would rate as Very Good were it not for the library stamps and mylared dustjackets. Seriously. Many are hardly circulated at all and some make you wonder who bought them and why. They never seem to have made it to the shelves. If I was looking at the budget, I'd look at why so many books are being purchased if they are not in demand?

If you go to an exlibrary sale at say, the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore, you will find books that have been on the shelves since 1920 or 1930, not Harry Potter! They are well worn, and even so, some are valuable because they are now out of print. Libraries like Enoch Pratt have a limited budget and have to *plan* their purchases very carefully. One wonders when a library literally discards thousands of books every month, how well considered the purchases are. And then, one wonders how well considered is the new Strategic Plan?

Enoch Pratt and other inner city libraries would probably love to have our County's exlibrary books, were it not for the fact they are stamped with property of the Fairfax County library.

What happened to the used booksales that took place in Chantilly a couple of times a year? Is that being phased out as part of the new plan?

This is another example of people who have so very much, taking it all for granted and being unaware of or oblivious to the needs of others who do not. Are we supposed to think these are just good librarians following orders? Could no one speak up from within the system? Why does it take someone raiding the trash dumpster to tell us about this? For shame.

Everyone's all up in arms about the Strategic Plan because jobs and services are threatened, but the wasteful disposal of books has been going on for some time and is not part of the Strategic Plan. At least, that's what we are being told.

Either way, it's not good!

UPDATE: Library Changes Officially Put on Hold

But Wednesday night's meeting of the Fairfax County Library Board is still on - and sure to attract lots of book lovers.
http://herndon.patch.com/groups/politics-and-elections/p/update-library-changes-to-be-put-on-hold

The vice-chair of the Fairfax County Library Board of Trustees says the entire matter of staffing and reorganization at county library branches will be put on hold until the matter can be reviewed more thoroughly.

Earlier this year the library board revealed plans for changes in the system - including staffing cuts - to deal with smaller county budgets and changing reader habits.

Library supporters were also outraged that outdated books were no longer going to Friends of Library groups for resale - and instead were being trashed.

The plan was met with outcry from many patrons, and Fairfax County Supervisor Sharon Bulova had said she would ask the Board of Supervisors at Tuesday's meeting to halt the process until more information could be learned.

But library vice-chair Charles Fegan said during the Supervisors meeting that the group will make a motion at Wednesday's meeting to put the entire matter on hold.

“I’m very pleased the community concerns itself so much,” he told the board, adding that the library board had a target date of Nov. 15 to complete a revision of the strategic plan and report back to the Board of Supervisors.

I have two young children, and I take them to the library regularly. Both of them love to read, but if I were to buy them every book they ever wanted to read the house would become full of nothing but books. So when they grow up, instead of living in my basement they'll have full-time jobs and pay their own income and property taxes like I do. The system works.

If the county wants to save money then it should get rid of some of the over paid top crust county workers. I saw one that gets 350k a year. On average thats about the property taxes of 70 homes. or property tax on 800 new cars. Sure the Government works for us.

More Than 200 Turn Out for Library Board Meeting

Board members agree to take time to 'gather more input' on proposed changes in light of a shrinking budget.

The Fairfax County Library Board of Trustees voted Wednesday night to suspend a controversial pilot program that would reduce staffing, change the role of staff in the youth services/children's section and, over the long-term, replace librarians with "library customer service specialists."

An overflowing crowd of more than 200 people attended the meeting at George Mason Regional Library in Annandale Wednesday night—breaking out into cheers as the Board voted to suspend the entire proposed strategic plan for the system.

The Board of County Supervisors had passed a resolution Tuesday asking the library system to gather more input from staff and the community before reducing staff, consolidating help desks and hiring more staff that do not hold Master of Library Science degrees.

Despite there being more than 200 in the audience, only five were permitted to speak before the Board, per Board rules. All five speakers strongly criticized the proposed changes, which would start with pilot programs at the Reston Regional Library and Burke Centre Library.

"We are working under two assumptions: one is that our county cannot pay for a library service. We are the second richest county in the country," Kathy Kaplan, of the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Association, told the Board.

Mary Zimmerman, the past chair of the Friends of the George Mason Library, said that the Master of Library Science degree provided specialized skills for patrons. She said that, as a retired history professor, she's seen many college students who don't even write term papers until their junior years. She questioned whether someone with an associate's degree or bachelor's degree would have the same type of research abilities.

"I really urge you to reconsider this beta plan. Because it will not serve the citizens of Fairfax County," she said.

But while passionate advocates of the library system have won more time, they may still have some work to do convincing casual library users.

Inside the library, Kristan Corsiglia browsed through shelves, searching for a good read. When told of the potential change in staffing, she asked, "What's

What about the use of a resolution claiming "all county residents benefit from turf fields?" That's the same ploy on a bigger scale and not even true.
