Organized Crime in FFX

The news today has been reporting the bust of "the Bansal family", it's the first organized crime bust I've ever heard around here ever. The news only talks about 'money-laundering, loan sharking, " etc. Anybody know any places where these things actually happen?? Like, is there a Starbucks somewhere that serves as a front for a shylock biz? Anybody ever hear anything about this other than what was on the news?

There's gotta be some good rumors

As usual, the official Fairfax County public information office release is far more informational than anything in the mainstream media. Release replicated below, link to official press release here.

--begin press release--
Police Arrest Members of an Organized Crime Organization

Detectives from the Fairfax County Organized Crime and Narcotics Division have concluded an extensive investigation into the Bansal organized crime family and organization. Dubbed Operation Underdog, the investigation began over two years ago when detectives discovered the organization’s ties to illegal sports gambling. Police later uncovered links to loan sharking, illegal Internet gambling, fraud, money laundering, narcotic distribution and extortion.

Detectives have served over 25 search warrants on homes, businesses and financial institutions as part of the largest operation of this type in the police department’s history. The search warrants, served in Fairfax County, Arlington County, Prince William County, Stafford County, Frederick County MD, and Dare County NC, have enabled police to seize almost two million dollars in cash and jewelry estimated at about one million dollars.

On Wednesday, February 8 at about 11 a.m., the Fairfax County Police Department was assisted by the Arlington County Police Department, Prince William County Police Department, Stafford County Sheriffs Office and Kill Devil Hills Police Department in North Carolina. Simultaneously, these five jurisdictions served eight search warrants and arrested eight people simultaneously.

The names, addresses and charges of those arrested are listed below:

Three counts of distribution of marijuana
-- end press release --

Has anyone had any contact with this ring? The only remotely organized illegal operation I've encountered in Fairfax was a bodega in Chantilly where you could purchase mid-grade marijuana in large quantities. Possibly connected, but I doubt it.

Also, while none of the Bansal's are on the arrest list, 3 of the 8 have miscellaneous charges from the past:

"HARJANI ","RAJAN "," ","046"," 8720","MIDDLEFORD ","DR","SPRINGFIELD ","VA","03/12/2004","FAIL OBEY STOP/YLD-SGN"
"LINTON ","MICHAEL ","D","025"," 3106","S HAYES ","ST","ARLINGTON ","VA","05/19/2001","70-74MPH/55MPH ZONE"
"GUPTA ","GAURAV "," ","023"," 10509","SCHOEFFER ","DR","NOKESVILLE ","VA","08/22/2003","DWI ALCOHOL"

I'm sure the rest of them will appear in the next arrest list update Wednesday night.

If anyone wants them, full size booking photos are available here: http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/archive/bansalarrests/021606bansalarrests_files/

I wonder if Operation Underdog is what caused them to shoot and kill that eye doctor because he was suspected of gambling?

Bansals extorted money from many of the people, including me. I was a college student, and one of his goons, pretending to be a college student, introduced me to him. I only took $2000, but payed over $5000 in interest, and he used to charge me interest on weekly basis. After paying over $5000, when I told him, that I have paid his interest and principle, he refused to sign off the loan documents and threatened me of dire consequences. I am glad his behind the bars, and I hope he fucking stays there forever.

You should've looked up Advance America in Herndon. They only charge 360 percent interest.

That's how loan-sharking works. Out of curiosity, how many points were you paying in interest?

And thanks for reviving this thread, it was my first post ever on fairfaxunderground! Ahhh, the memories...

I met some of the Bansals before, and they were pretty cool.

The worst thing I heard them doing, was threatening to light some guy's gas station on fire, which they never even did.

I came across Nick, Tom, and Mike. Nick was a funny dude, and Mike was cool. If you screwed up paying them money, then who's fault is that really? If people loan you dough, you pay back what you agree to, it's that simple.

Yeah, but it's against the law to lend money at super-high interest rates. Even 3% interest amounts to 156% on an annual basis, and that's just interest, not the principal. So even if you agree, a contract isn't valid if the terms violate the law.

And I'm guessing these folks weren't paying taxes on their earnings either.
