core aeration

Anybody know of any good deals for lawn core aeration.

I had a seasonal guy do it last year, but this year he hasn't bothered showing up. I guess his work is keeping him busy over in alexandria, while I live in centerville.

I have a neighbor who wants to have it done to.

I've done it in the past, but sold my truck so I can't lug around the rental.

Why bother?

And that's a real question, not a snide remark.

My lawn looks fine, twenty+ years and counting. Never a coring or dethatching.

I smell marketing, not science.

20yrs is perhaps a little extreme but I agree -- you really do not need that done yearly. Maybe every two or three years. It can improve your lawn, but it's not like the lawn die without it.

I've found that plain old watering is 90% of quality lawn care with the other 10% being fertilizer. My immediate neighbor and I have in-ground sprinklers. He cores and dethatches, I don't. He uses a commercial lawn-care company that also spreads various chemicals (in addition to plain old fertilizer) while I head over to the hardware store and buy a few bags of fertilizer/crabgrass preventer during the year (4 bags a year? I think that's it) and spread it myself. My lawn is thick and green and crabgrass-free. His lawn is thick and green and crabgrass-free. My lawn HAS clover here and there, his does not. If you look REAL closely at my lawn you WILL see "thatch" deep under the green; his does not have that. If you are more than a few feet away, however, there is no visible difference. Both of our lawns are miles better looking than our other non-watering neighbors.

And most importantly in a kids-friendly neighborhhood, I have no probelm letting the brats play on my lawn; he would have a problem with that.

Yes, but do the dogs like to take a dump on it

Lol! That actually brings up a different type of datapoint about these two lawns!

The dogs seem to like our two lawns equally, however the squirrels, blue jays, and especially robins for SURE prefer my lawn to roam around on. Maybe the ground is softer for the squirrels to dig in (that thatch being present under the green) and the worm population is higher due to the lack of poisoning...or something.

One another difference that I forgot about above - I use a mulching lawnmower (chops the grass into itty-bitty pieces and chucks them back on the lawn) and I don't rake leaves, instead using said lawnmower to mulch them in place. He uses a bagging mower and rakes leaves religiously.

Go rent one and do it yourself. It's not rocket science to push that fucker around your yard in two different directions. It's like $70 for the day. However, if you don't have access to a pickup truck, it's a total pain to transport.
