I think the charge has to do with knowlingly providing the info and the criminal intent. If he had done it as a "purely intellectual exerecise" it may be something else, but it's a fine line.

He could have taken it to trial and argued the 1st Amend, but it would be luck of the draw and he may have had to appeal (and still lose)

The little fucker sounds like he was guilty, felt guilty and came to his senses. Hopefully the feds will get some worthy intel from him.

Precisely. It's like lock picks; they're only illegal to carry if you're using them with criminal intent.
