The weakness of the last mall in Springfield was that if you didn't live in the area there was no reason to go there. Looks like they are determined to repeat the same mistake.

Give it a little time ... the Potbellys_Chipotle_FroYo trifecta will make their way there too.

That's amazing. Can somebody tell me why we need a mall in the middle of Springfield anymore? I know Vornado has done the financial analysis and all that stuff, but seriously, what is the draw of continuing to have a mall in Springfield?

I know they're pushing the "upscale destination" angle. But in reality, that's not an upscale area. "Build something shiny" and the yuppies will flock to it. It's possible - I know that a lot of people who used to shop at Tysons just avoid that clusterfuck altogether nowadays and go to Pentagon City. Maybe, just maybe, enough wealthier people who steer clear of Tysons now would go to Springfield Mall to get their consumerist fix.

But it sounds like they're failing at the "upscale retailer" push anyway.

The whole thing sounds like snake oil to me.

If the delay in opening is such a positive, and well-thought-out move by the development company (it's not a delay. they're opening later "on purpose" right before the Christmas shopping season, or so they say) then why didn't they even bother to update their web site? Their corporate site still says "mid-2014."

Will never be completed. Snake oil is legit compared to what Vornado has pullind.
When the three "anchor stores" leases expire then it's kaput.
Go check the site. They did enough demolition to show some work was being preformed per the fartfax county agreement.

The Starbucks referred to above is going into Target and should open by the end of the year. According to Vornado, all the restaurants planned for Springfield Town Center have been leased, including the food court leases and two sit down restaurants. Leasing of tenant space remains on track and is about 50% leased. Dick's Sporting Goods is one of the larger tenants coming to STC. Foot Locker and Shoe Parade have also signed leases.

Vornado is currently in talks with Curacao Department Stores about a location at the STC. This department store caters to the Hispanic/Latino community and currently has locations in Southern California and Arizona. This would be their first department store on the East Coast. http://www.icuracao.com/

Vornado is also courting a large number of other upscale retailers favored by the Latino/Hispanic community to address the demographics of the area.

So does Vornado really think this will make any middle-aged, middle class lady want to go there and feel safe? Springfield Mall died when the lady was kidnapped from the Macy's parking garage and ended up dead. What a big waste of money. Should just have bulldozed the whole place and turned it into a parking lot.

Do you honestly think any upper middle class middle aged woman is going to give up shopping at Tyson's, Fair Oaks, or Pentagon City to shop at Springfield Town Center without an upscale department store like Nordstrom's to bring them in? Both the Macy's and JCP there currently suck with regards to selection and customer service and they both cater to the Latino population. I think we all know the who will really be shopping at the new STC!!!! And Vornado is well aware of this as well. While they are working to attract retailers that have mass appeal first, but failing that, they are also working to attract those that appeal to the latino/hispanic upper middle class, since that is who will be doing the majority shopping there. The demographics of the area don't lie.

I won't be surprised if an Aldi or some sort of "El Grande Mart (Owned by Koreans staffed by illegal immigrants)" will be a Springfield Mall v1.1 tenant.

I guess it makes sense that Vornado would cater to the Latino population. The new Springfield Town Center will attract the Latinos anyway and I read that the 24 - 45 year old latino population is the fastest growing demographic and an economic force. If Vornado builds a mall that caters to Latinos, they will come from all over to patronize the mall. Why compete with Fair Oaks, Tysons, Potomac Mills or Pentagon City.

I predict within 2 days of opening, Springfield Town Center will have at least one stabbing!

Remember Cerro Grande and the scum of the earth that it attracted? Imagine an entire mall devoted to the illegal immigrant population.

Now ain't that grande?
