Radiation detectors along roads leading into DC?

I took a class at GMU and the professor was saying how there is a ring of radiation detectors around Washington DC for all the roads leading into it. Does anybody know what these look like? I've never seen any. I see these little square boxes on poles pointing down at the highway but I think those are traffic speed sensors since they aren't really on roads leading in/out necessarily. Does anybody know where any real detectors are and what they look like?

Not just along the roads, but other locations as well. This is not just to detect conventional nuclear weapons (or portable nuclear weapons), but also "dirty bombs" made with radiactive material.
