Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
We drove up from Atlanta for the Easter Weekend only to find out our favorite monument is closed? Anyone know the story here? We talked with a few folks who said they found a serious crack at the base of the monument and have closed it for safety reasons while the engineers try and figure it out. WTH?
Park service noticed an unstable foundation due to recent freeze/thaw cycles and root displacement from the cherry trees due to the late bloom this year.
Supposedly there was also some recent seismic activity (on the order of 1.7) that managed to move the foundation in such a manner as to also add stress to the base. That combined with the severe winds causing a severe sway in the structure as of late left them with little choice. I'm hearing the price tag could run up to the 100's of millions to resolve.
Awhile back there was some rumors that the ground was sinking beneath the monument. There was some speculation the monument could start leaning like the Tower of Pisa w/in 10-12yrs.
It's been sold to Qatar to help pay for health care. They will start dismantling it this fall so it can be shipped overseas. A new 300 foot tall Obama statue will be erected in its place (to be paid for in defense cut money).
