Lorton Nike Site Scheduled for Demolition (Almost)

Calling all history buffs:

Fairfax County Park Authority has taken the first step to approve the demolition of the old Lorton Nike Missile Base on Furnace Road. From the Fairfax Times:

According to Park Authority documents, the school system plans to raze dilapidated buildings on the now-park-owned property, which was a former Nike missile launch site, to build the middle school.

The trade would also allow shared use of fields and parking, according to the staff report. The new park site is less constrained by environmentally sensitive areas than the prior site, according the report, so more of it can be developed for recreational activities.

Not sure if anything can be done to save this historic Cold War site, though I'm betting getting in touch with the Cold War Museum, who had planned to open in the Furnace Road site, would be a good start.

What's to save? Like most military bases since WWII it's a dump with institutional furniture and cheap, ugly architecture. Probably has lots of asbestos in the walls, too.

What they need to do is save some Nike missile-related hardware and set up a display on one of these bases, like a replica missile on a launcher, and maybe some radar and electronics gear. That would be worth it and people would find it interesting.

But I can't understand the urge to preserve every crappy government building, at enormous expense, when the land is better used for something else. Save some cool artifacts and let the rest go already.

Its a shame the cold war museum couldn't open. That would have been awesome.

I believe there are two pieces to the puzzle. The Cold War Museum plans to open at the old Nike site at the corner of Hooes Road and Furnace Road; I believe the buildings to be demolished are part of that old site (which was large) but not part of the main complex where the cold war museum will be located. The buildings to be demolished are outling buildings.

You know, I've always conflated Nike shoes and Nike missiles. Good thing I'm not responsible for the latter: "Just Do It" probably isn't what you want folks with the ability to launch missiles to be thinking...

What's the point of opening another museum in that area that no one will visit? Apparently the Marine Corps Museum is already having a hell of a time attracting "non-Marine" visitors.
