Back in my younger years, I worked at a large chain store that sold licenses and fishing equip (but not in Virginia). These guys came in and bought a couple of these cheap $15 rod/reel packs. I asked if they needed licenses...and they laughed...and said no, they were just going to fish for a day. Two days later they came back in and tried to get my manager to sell them back-dated licenses because they got busted and now were looking at $250 fines. We of course didn't (nor couldn't the way the licenses were set up). I think they saved $12 each by not buying the 5 day license.

Yes. Lake Brittle near Gainesville has a regular posse of DGIFers carding you at almost all times.

I was checked once where Rt. 50 crosses the Shenandoah. Game Warden
came out of nowhere. Glad I had mine. Two guys fishing about 50 yards
from me didnt have licenses and they were busted. I also understand they
like to check around the Front Royal area too.

I wonder how dangerous it really is to fish without a license?

Thank god we have dilligent game wardens patrolling the waterways ensuring that only licensed people are fishing. Just imagine the carnage, the death and destruction that would ensue if everyone fished without a license.
