Kids left in car at Giant
Posted by: Wtfnova ()
Date: June 19, 2009 06:20PM

Today, I was in the parking lot of giant when I noticed that there were 3 kids left in a car, locked, without windows open or the engine running. I called the police, and an ambulance showed up. The lady; an Asian, came out after the ambulance arrived, oblivious to why an ambulance was waiting for her kids. They were in the car for at least 20 minutes. She was telling the ambulance driver that "she was in hurry, you can go". The oldest child was 8. What could she be charged with, and what might the penalty he? I left before the police arrived.

That's probably a "child endangerment" charge, off the top of my head.

Could be worse, even.

Can't recall the charge that guy in Northern Va faced a few years ago when he "forgot" the baby in the minivan, after unloading his other 32 kids safely, and the kid basically broiled to death. I recall he pled it down to some non-homicide charge?

Child endangerment is most likely fitting; however, it's hard for it to stick if the weather conditions didn't dictate a "dangerous" situation inside the vehicle. Still, leaving your kids for any length of time is endangerment in my book.

Also, yes, the guy from last year did get off...damn near scott free. I think he was deemed "unfit" to stand trial, but I don't have time to find the articles on that if anyone else wants to post it.

The officer who arrived at the scene called, and told me she got off Scott free because re children were not sweating. The mother told him some bullshit that she was sick and had to use the bathroom. Apparantly, you need 4 bags of groceries to use the bathroom....

Definitely some horrid parenting, and sounds like some lazy officering too.

She really came out with 4 bags of groceries?

This story can't be true.

I've never seen an Asian shop at Giant.

They all go to H Mart or Grand Mart.

Yeah, I'm sure the officer gave you the scoop on his decision-making process. They tend to do that, mostly because they really really really really really really reaaaaaaally want to make sure you are happy and approve of their decisions. Go sell horse crap someplace else moron.

to the OP (wtfnova), I applaud you for calling the ambulance to help out with the situation.

Even if you had not been there, it's likely nothing serious would have come from the situation...but it's reassuring to know that there are still concerned citizens around these days.

I'm not saying that it's fine and dandy to leave your children in the car for any reason-people need to realize that on a hot enough day a child can die in a short amount of time.

The "mom" in this situation is damn lucky she didn't get cuffed and taken into custody.

What also upsets me that if it was a dog in the car, the owner would have been immediately cuffed and penalized a hell of a lot more than this dumbass was.

dont Asians eat dogs? I bet the same lady also had a st. bernard in the car cooking for that evening's dinner. The kids were probably in the car to baste it.

Its upto the children, the cops would ask those three children if they want to press charges. There would be no case if the kids refuse.

My Mom used to leave my brother and I in the car all the time when we were kids...

A few times, it was for an hour... No big deal, we lived... Even though Mom took the keys, we still had the technology to put the windows down...

Back then, the windows used a crank :)

What if the kids were 8, 10 and 12? Would it be OK in your book then?

Yes, I saw that the first time you wrote it.

What if the kids were 8, 10 and 12. In your opinion is it OK to leave them in the car for 20 minutes?

Well, I agree about the windows open, but I would never leave my kids in a running car!

Anyway, I think the county CPS guidelines for leaving kids alone applies to cars as well, so that mother was negligent if the oldest kid in the car was only 8.

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dfs/childrenyouth/homealone.htm

Of course, with a car, you have the heat factor that you don't necessarily have in a home!! Yikes.

In temperatures over 90 degrees, it takes about 10 minutes for a child to developserious brain damage, so anything around 5 minutes is probably only minor brain damage, nothing to get alarmed about.

Doesn't work like that. If the mother were black I guarantee you the kids would be in CPS custody right now.

If the mother wasn't asian, she would have been arrested. She acted like she didn't know english, or was mentally challenged. Ignorance is bliss

cheese and rice - how old are you ? = well, yea, it used to be okay - and if you got burned by one of your siblings with the lighter - well, that's what happens when you're bored - again this isn't the 60's or even the 70's - leave your kids at home if you must - but plan to be a parent if you are going to have kids
