I have a baby sitter coming over on an up coming Saturday night to watch an infant. Very low maintenance kid for 3 to 4 hours. Kid will most likely sleep the entire time. What is the going rate to pay a 17 year old girl per hour for this type of work?

Legally it is the minimum wage -$7.25/ hour for Virginia. We paid $10 / hour with two kids and travel time....don't say 'minimum effort for kid sleeping' as you are paying for security, not effort.

This is the governments job, it takes a village. You should pay nothing.

Generally I pay $10 for high school babysitters if they're not doing much i.e. the kid is asleep. $15 for college. If they drive themselves, come from far away, or actually play with the kid, I give them more. But ask her yourself - most of the kids I hire would give me some ridiculously low number so don't pay her $15 if she's expecting 8. I would do her rate but then round up the total. It really all depends on how badly you want her to free up her schedule the next time you call.

The "minimum effort" was meant more as meaning its not a hard job. A 2 year old in my mind takes a lot more work as they are a lot harder to "watch". I would think the sitter would get paid more for a kid that takes more effort to watch.

Really, only $10 a hour for two kids? I thought it would be more then that.

I hope this sitter has references. I never trust a sitter with our infant. We insist that the sitter have infant CPR, good references, and zero history or drugs/criminal record of any kind. I pay $20.

Haggle w pay and the babysitter won't come back. Good sitters are hard to find.

Agreed.

One frustrating part of hiring a young sitter is that they're often afraid to even talk about money, and you can't tell whether they're "happy" with the rate, or not.

I think I have my answer. Seems most people agree $10 to $12 seems to be standard so $20 to $25 for would be a good deal. Thanks

Hopefully she won't get stoned while you're out and put the babies in the oven. I seriously don't trust sitters with infants. Sometimes they sneak out while they're asleep or steal your stuff.
