What do you mean by "radar detector activators?"

If you mean jammers, then yes, they are illegal in VA.

anything that can detect or interupt police radar/lidar is illegal. radar detectors are legal in all states EXCEPT in VA and DC where they are illegal.

Detector activators are usually small hand held devices (battery operated) that when activated send a pulse of m/w on multiple bands simultaneously which sets off radar detectors. They are simply an entertainment device I believe. I have an old one that I got from an ad in Pop. Mechanics at least 10 years ago (approx. $20). Operates on 9v (not rechargable). Mine has a range of maybe 200 yards but it is fun to use. Just push the button and watch all the break lights come on. I have shown it to VA state PD officers and they were of the opinion that it was not illegal and the one I have has all the appropriate Fcc bla-bla-bla on it and with such short range definitely does not require licensing. It also did not interfere with the radar speed gun when activated at fairly close range.

the device itself is not illegal but using it in traffic that will cause a dangerous situation is illegal.

Fuk VA police. If they're gonna stop people for shit like tint, tire tread, going 40 in a 35... then I'll keep my Valentine detector. It's undetectable under the front bumper. Get one.

goddamn police making me drive on safe tires! That might actually be one to worry about, btw. Driving on shitty tires, especially during the spring rainy season, isn't a good idea.

If you have a device that transmits radio frequency signals it has to conform to FCC regs. If the power is high enough and/or in the "wrong" spectrum you can get in deep trouble.

POSSESSION of RADAR detectors is NOT illegal in VA, just OPERATION of them. As long as it is not operating - like sitting on the floor of the car, unplugged, the police cannot confiscate it. Confiscation has been challenged and the state lost. Of course, they aren't going to be pulling you over for the RADAR detector.

LASER JAMMERS ARE LEGAL! Since they do not emit radio frequency transmissions they do not fall under any FCC reg. The downside is, an effective one isn't worth it. Most speed traps are going to be RADAR.
