Good Windows Replacment Company

I gotta say, window companies are the worst to deal with. Here is my dilemma.

I am the home-owners son, renting the place. Every time i call a window company to come out for a estimate, they want the home owner on site. The home owner is not in the state, and i have full authorization to make the decision.

So can anyone recommend a window company that is not shady. And will deliver on what they promise, a free estimate.

Have you tried getting the homeowner to write a letter stating that he is not available for this appointment, and you're authorized to make these decisions in his absence?

I look forward to hearing what other have to say, too. Every company wants to come out and do the same 2 hour presentation. I don't give a fuck! Just give me an estimate. There is no reason 9 windows should cost $10,000, either.

Try calling Transnational Corp (703) 359-5400 in FFX and Ceicil Hanger with Second Generation (703) 754-1544.
Tansnational did my windows before I moved into my current house which were done by Second Generation. Both companies are simply awesome to deal with and you can tell them to forget about the sales presentation, just measure and give me the quote.

And about not being the homeowner...tell them that you are. If you have "full authorization" from your folks then there is no point in telling these people that you are renting the property.

Stay away from Blaine Window Repair Services. I recently had them fix my patio door, and despite sending a competent technician, it was probably the most convoluted customer service experience I've ever dealt with. In short, it took about 5 weeks from the time I called the until they made the repair. They have a very strange process for quoting prices, I can't understand how they stay in business.

Avoid at all costs!

I'm thinking of doing it myself. The web says its not really that hard. Anybody have any good/bad experiences DIY'ing it?

There's a fair amount of work going into the process. We took the bait and went with the Thompson Creek folks (yes, the ones you hear about on WTOP). This was done after two neighbors had them installed and liked them - a lot.

We had about 15 windows done including a full bay window which was about 30% of the cost and one window where there was only wall/siding before.

The total cost was about $11,000, but assuming you get eligible windows, $1,500 will be refunded back to you by the Feds on your 2009 tax return.

We have indeed noticed that the Air Conditioner does not work as hard as it did the last time the temp hit 90.

Redoing a whole house of windows is a lot of work. If you have to ask here if its too hard, it will be too hard for you. Not to be rude, but it can be a really labor-intensive process. If you do it wrong, you can get water infiltrating the insides of your walls, causing mold, rot, and requiring all the work to be re-done.. If you've only got one or two ground-level windows to replace, you can give it a try and see how well it works out. If you're dead-set on doing it yourself, at least hire a pro to work with you for the first couple windows so you learn the proper way for your particular house.

That being said, I'm getting really sick of the shady door-to-door window salesmen that have been hitting my neighborhood hard.

I've stright up told every window company i've called. I do not want a 90min presentation on windows. I want a quote in 15mins. It's only 2 windows and a sliding glass door.

Half of them, said forget, the other half, will see when they arrive on site.

Doing resarch, for a window that will qualify for the tax rebate, they seem to be going around $500.00 a window.. Is this about right?

There's a lot of variability in the windows. What size are they? Do you want vinyl? Do you want them with the inside framing or a clear pane? Do you want single hung or double hung? Do you want inside framing to be plane or decorative? Sliders or casement windows?

1 window - 5' x 3' 11''
1 window - 6' x 3' 11''

Don't care about vinyl, but they have to be brown in color on the outside

Everything else i don't care about, as long as they meet the new energy tax refund spec

they also need to be sliders, (slide left and right)

Most prices im getting back are around $500.00 mostly a little more then that

The only advice I can offer on this is to NOT use Blaine. Horrible experience. They caused more damage than they repaired.

I had Creative Windows out of Sterling do my townhouse in Centreville. I had 10 custom made windows, all double hung, low-e coated, argon filled and elligble for the 2009 tax credit. Total cost was $3500 even...included all taxes, etc. and take away of the old windows.
If you shop around you can find a little cheaper, but $3500 for 10 higher end windows isn't bad. They're Simonton windows too which are a nice mid to high level window.

Oscar is the guy that helped me, he's not pushy and the owner of the company does the final measurements. Took them 3.5 hours to install and be gone. Painless.
