Starbucks Closing 300 stores, 7000 employees

Really this comes as no surprise. Starbucks is almost the ultimate in conspicuous consumption. If you drink coffee, buy it at the supermarket and make it yourself. What the US and its people must realize is:
1. American rampant consumerism is no longer sustainable. The rest of the world can no longer let the US vacuum up the worlds savings to support the mountain of debt this consumerism costs. Neither can the US afford it, and it is highly likely that Starbucks was never affordable in the first place.
2. Economically and environmentally the world's savings are desperately needed to make the investments in the plants, equipment and technology needed to reverse the environmental disaster that faces us and to enable more of the worlds people to afford a few more goods and services.
3. The first Gulf war was paid for/fought out of the Reagon/Keynesian stimulus (spent on military) inventory. The Bush tax cuts and the second Gulf War and occupation have been paid for by maxing out the Visa card, then maxing out the Mastercard and maxing out all the other cards. Don't know if you have anything left on your lines of credit?

I'm surprised this didn't happen to Starbuck's sooner. Look at their business model...

First, their entire growth was based on a fad from the 1990s. I am surprised that they continued to build at the rate they did given the fact that between Friends being off the air and Dunkin' Donuts, BK and McDonald's cutting into their market share, they should have hit the wall years ago.

Second, Starbucks' entire marketing model was based on proximity to stores. Not advertising. Not PR. It was "let's build a store where there wasn't one before." The idea was that if people stumbled across a Starbucks, they would have the impulse to go in. That's why you see so damn many Starbucks near each other.

Third, they went astray with their model when they started adding exclusive CDs from Sade. Not sure how much they spent on that kind of crap, but a dollar was one dollar too many.

Fourth, and final, in Starbucks you paid a lot of money to stand around waiting in line for one guy to make your fucking drink. At the end of the day, while Starbucks' coffee is pretty good, I would rather spend less time in line and spend less on a fucking cup of coffee.

But sometimes it is outright ridiculous. Like the Colonnade at Union Mill... there is a Starbucks in the Giant and then another Starbucks a few doors down. Guess we're so lazy that we can't walk to another store to get our fat and sugar laiden coffee.

300 stores that most of us won't even miss because that is hardly a drop in the bucket for them.

And really, the media blows any kind of job cut out of proportion now a days. The other day, I saw "Breaking News".. Target is cutting 1,000 jobs. That is their Holiday help going back to school. They would have cut these 1,000 jobs either way--good or bad economy. But get the media involved and you would think Mt. Redoubt was taking these 1,000 persons with it when it blows it's top.

The 1,000 jobs are getting cut from target HQ in Minneapolis. The seasonal help was gone the first week of January

Target is getting ready to do the same (1,000 employees)...and I thought they were running their business pretty well.

http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/stories/2009/01/26/daily30.html

Target Corp., which is opening three stores in Hawaii this year, on Tuesday announced it's cutting 1,000 jobs at its Minneapolis headquarters and closing a distribution center.

The retailer said it will lay off 600 workers and eliminate 400 open positions.

Target also will close its Little Rock, Ark., distribution center later this year. The facility employs about 500 workers.

Part of the strength of Starbucks revenues and balance sheet was not from coffee, but from owning and leasing property. By having a TON of stores (especially the stand alone units which were owned outright), their balance sheet looked much much stronger - especially in the real estate boom.

Now that commercial real estate is flubbering, the company's balance sheet is not nearly as rosey.

I give them credit on the leasing strategy (at least their initial leasing strategy). The reason so many Starbucks are oddly shaped and kind of "funky" is because Starbucks would target space that was too small or too oddly shaped to be leased to pretty much anyone else. That's why so many Starbucks have limited seating or rely on a bar set-up.

I think in recent years, though, they have gotten away from that model, choosing larger spaces where they can set-up wi-fi, seating, kiosks, etc. I think that worked against them in the end because it drove up their operating costs.

their last quarter sales were down 69% !!!!

to put that into perspective -- if they lowered their prices that much, you could upgrade to a grande and still be able to pay your mortgage. amazing huh?

NPR interviewed a financial planner a few years back. She had a woman come to her that made 60 grand a year, had no money in the bank, and credit card debt. After going through her expenses, the planner found that this woman was going to the Starbucks in her work building lobby on average of three times a day, spending about $15.00 a day. Times that by 300 work days and you get $4,500.00 in Starbucks alone, and that is not counting any weekend visits!

Are you sure she was a financial planner or are you using that to goose your story? That is pretty incredible.

10% of her take home pay for coffee - yep that sounds like the average Starbucks patron...

I am not about to defend a $15.00 a day Starbucks habit, but I do wish to point out that, assuming a 5 day work week, and given the 10 holidays a year, there are only 250 work days in a year, and there may be less if the employee takes any vacation. 250 x 15 is "only" $3750 a year...

Someone spending that frivolously on what is basically a cup of warm water that has passed through ground up seeds is most likely being frivolous elsewhere in her finances. I bet used car salesmen love to see people like her walking into their showroom.

But that is the typical starbucks customer. New money and no sense about what to do with it.

That's a good strategy.

I just never want to be seen at starbucks. Who needs that horrible stuff. They even have to fortify it with more caffeine just to get people to keep buying it.

lol with premium coffee at ~11 bucks a pound and assuming you get 30-40 cups per pound that is in the 1000% mark-up range assuming you have 24 oz of brew. I can feed my family on 15 bucks per person per day...

It's pretty absurd when you look at Starbucks' store locator. I type in my address, and there are 14 within a 5 minute drive of my place. 14!! And my office address- there are 5 within a short walking distance. I can't think of any store that comes even close to the sheer number of these places, it's ridiculous.

Now I think I might walk down the street and get one of those Cafe Americanos...

Starbucks had just established two stores in Paris when I was there in 2004. The lines were out the door.

I admit I DO like my Cappuccino and pretty much hooked on Starbucks, but when in France, I prefer the ambiance of the cafes - and the price is the same.

A couple years ago I bought a small personal Expresso/Cappuccino coffee maker and now buy the beans so I can brew my own at home. The cost for a double shot Grande Cappuccino, with Soy Milk is about $0.60 at the Junes Cafe. Tastes every bit as good.

I used to know a woman who did this. She would order two lattes at a time and would do this at least twice a day. Then she told me that she would go to Sweetwater for lunch, sit at a booth and make a meal from a house salad, free bread and water. She was proud of the fact that she could get a sit down meal at a restaurant for 3 bucks or whatever. Probably didn't tip much either. Oh yeah, and she was a total bitch.

The forced ambience of most Starbucks makes me gag. That and the "Can I call"? bullshit. How about, "Make this triple stupid fucking coffee drink right now before I have to jack you up."

$15 per person a day is feeding them extremely well.

If you tried hard enough, you could feed an entire family of four on $15 a day. Probably even less, if you didn't mind feeding them over-processed garbage day in and day out. I just saw a family pack of 6 frozen salisbury steaks at giant for $2.99. Throw in 4 potatos and a head of broccoli, and you just made dinner for four for around $5.

By the way Food Stamps (now called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or 'SNAP'(lol)) provides $5.32 per day per adult. Super LOLlers is that that is only a Vente Cappy with the paper at Starfucks...

I have a family of 5, our food budget (groceries + restaurants) is ~$250 p/week which = $7.15 p/person p/day and we live well. One can live on <$10 a day easily for food if you make your own and go out just once a week or so.
