where to find gold or silver wire

Hi

I was wondering where to find silver or gold speaker/electrical wire. Anywhere from 12-30 gauge.

EVERYTHING that Sears Hardware, Lowes, and Radioshack have is copper.

If you want the actual wire to be gold, I don't know if anyone makes anything like that which you could find locally in a retail shop. I think most of the audio stuff is only gold terminators, not gold wire.

You might be able to find really thin gold or silver wire at Michael's, for jewelry-making. That would probably be 20 guage or even higher, though.

There used to be a shop in tysons called "Towne Silver and Goldsmith" that made jewelry in the store. I'm sure they have gold solder and wire. If they still are in business, you could try them.

The reason audiophiles prefer gold terminators and connectors over copper or tin is because of galvanic corrosion, not because the gold conducts any better than copper or tin (even though, technically, gold does conduct better).

The electrolytic "rust" that builds up between two contacts can degrade the conductivity. You can save money by using copper connectors, but then you'll need to clean them with a bit of 00 steel wool every few years. (I know, that sounds anal-retentive, but isn't that what being an audiophile is all about??)

A jewelry supply store will carry 14K gold wire and .925 Sterling wire. An internet search for Jewelry Wire Suppliers. There area few in MD that sell gold and silver wire.

Solid gold is harder to find as gold filled is preferred by most jewelry artisans
