Benjamin Trump of West Springfield, a doctoral student in The University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, is featured in the documentary “Follow the Leader,” premiering at 8 p.m. Sunday on the PBS/WORLD Channel.
“Follow the Leader,” shown on the series “America ReFramed,” tells the coming-of-age story of what “change” means for three 16-year-olds who feel destined to lead the world. Since its September premiere, “America ReFramed” has offered a glimpse of a changing American society through the lens of 26 independent films.
“Follow the Leader,” filmmaker Jonathan Goodman Levitt’s first film made in the United States, is the season finale.
High school class presidents — Ben, the loyalist from Virginia, D.J., the believer from Massachusetts, and Nick, the idealist from Pennsylvania — are initially conservative. As they grow up in the post-9/11 world and over three life-changing years, they split into Republican, Democratic and independent camps as their roads toward the U.S. presidency diverge.
Trump works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Risk and Decision Analysis intern. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from Carnegie Mellon University.

Scouts host book fair for refugees
Jessica Lourenco and Sarah Harlow from Girl Scout Junior Troop 2325 of McLean — with help from troop-mates Caroline Klotz, Cassandra Pecheux, Nicole Henley, Alexa Jordan, Audrey Saliba, Serena Marks, Dabney Stuart, Georgia Titus, Maeve Englehart and Pamela Zhou — completed their Bronze Award Project earlier this month with a Reading for Refugees Book Fair.
The Bronze Award is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can achieve and a stepping stone to the Silver and Gold awards.
Earlier this year, troop co-leaders Barbara Leiber-Klotz and Christiane Lourenco invited Summer Parish from Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area to a meeting to educate the girls about the LSS Refugee Program and what it means to be a refugee.
The Scouts decided to host the book fair for refugee children in their community. Along with books, the children enjoyed face painting, story time, crafts and games.
The Scouts assembled 10 care packages — totes filled with age-appropriate books — for the children’s families. The troop received so many donations, they were able to give several boxes of books to the LSS Refugee Program.
The Scouts promoted the event within their Service Unit as well as to other youth organizations, planned the activities, collected donations and coordinated transportation for the families. Child’s Play of McLean donated most of the books, Ramjay Inc. arranged transportation and Charles Wesley United Methodist Church provided the venue.

The Army Officers’ Wives’ Club of the Greater Washington Area’s Fort Myer Thrift Shop raised $255,850 this year for scholarships and community grants.

Herndon’s Closet names scholarship recipients
The Closet of Greater Herndon recently awarded $15,000 in college scholarships to 13 deserving high school graduates in ceremonies at five local high schools.
This year’s winners from Fairfax County are Katherine Ramirez-Lopez and Matthew White from Herndon High School; Erin Bennett, Kelly Brooks and Peter Ott from Oakton High School; Freedom Marques and William Parrella from Mountain View High School; and Melissa Guadalupe Martinez, Stephen Gurley and Tommy Reyes from South Lakes High School.
The Closet of Greater Herndon is a nonprofit thrift shop founded and operated by area faith-based communities. Since 1974 The Closet has awarded nearly $425,000 in college scholarships to more than 390 students and more than $2.6 million in direct cash grants to local service groups.
Robinson student tastes life at West Point
Brendan O’Connor, a junior at Robinson Secondary School, was selected to be among 500 attendees at West Point’s prestigious Summer Leaders Experience. He is the son of Janet and Fran O’Connor of Fairfax Station.
More than 4,000 juniors nationwide applied to SLE, which offers the opportunity to experience life at West Point. SLE attendees live in the cadet barracks, eat in the Cadet Mess, and participate in academic, leadership, athletic and military workshops. All SLE attendees participate in virtual-reality war simulation, military and physical fitness training.
Military salutes
Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas Seamands was selected for the 2013 Class of Adjutant General Corps Distinguished Members of the Regiment. He is a general officer assigned to the Headquarters, Department of the Army, Pentagon, in Washington, D.C.
The Army Regimental System, Distinguished Members of the Regiment provides a link with history for today’s soldiers. Through individual contributions, the special appointees perpetuate the history and traditions of the Regiment, thereby enhancing unit morale and esprit de corps.
Seamands is the son of George and Loretta Seamands of Springfield. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1981 from the University of Dayton, Ohio, and a master’s degree in 1996 from Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.
Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Monica Bermudez and Air Force Airmen Dakotah Christianson and Michael Watson graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Bermudez, daughter of Julie Campbell and stepdaughter of Benjamin Campbell Jr., both of Falls Church, earned distinction as an honor graduate. She is a 2003 graduate of West Springfield High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2006 from Old Dominion University.
Christianson, son of Reggie Christianson of Springfield, is a 2012 graduate of Burkburnett High School in Texas.
Watson, son of Matthew Watson of Fairfax, is a 2011 graduate of W.T. Woodson High School.
