When DCA is using runway 1 you're under a short approach from the west. It doesn't happen much. Most join the approach down near Mount Vernon and stay east of you. However, when DCA is using runway 19, you're under the departures, the go arounds and the arrivals from the south. In the summer, DCA spends a lot of time in this configuration explaining why you're seeing more planes. Also, with these pop up summertime thunderstorms we do a lot of scrambling to move planes around. They're out of their normal flows. This is another reason you've seen more above you.
Carry on and don't forget to sniff in those chemtrails we're weaving over the DC metro.
So why did they just start doing this? I have lived in this area for years and it has never sounded like i live nextdoor to the airport like it does now.
A friend at Am Airlines who works at Nat'l airport says that now that jets are quieter, they can land late at night. Jets fly in as late as 2 am. The noise has dramatically increased over Kingstowne.
Who do you contact to complain? I doubt our beloved Jim Moron will care....
The noise is horrible AND let's talk about the helicopters that like to buzz around all hours of the night too....
Nothing has changed at work. It's been the same traffic flows for 30+ years. DCA already has some of the country's most strict noise abatement rules. Planes must be over the river when they're within 10 miles of the airport up north or 5 miles down south. Outside those marks and it's just a free for all.
And yes, back in the day when planes were louder the airport basically shut down overnight. There's a decibels limit. These days most planes are under it and can come and go throughout the night.
