FAIRFAX, Va. - Fairfax County police say they have arrested a man suspected of scamming prospective renters.
Police say 31-year-old Richard Hiner of Catlett, Va., advertised rental homes on Craigslist. After giving potential tenants tours of properties, he allegedly had them sign a rental contract and provide payment toward the rent.
Officials say victims later found out Hiner was not affiliated with the properties, which were really owned by banks and in foreclosure.
Police say four such incidents occurred between July 13 and July 18.
Detectives posing as potential renters responded to an online listing for a rental home, and arrested Hiner when he arrived for their appointment on Thursday.
Hiner was charged with four counts of grand larceny by false pretense and three counts of burglary.
