Pedestrian Crash Involving Police Car
Mount Vernon Police District – At approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, a pedestrian crossed two lanes of stopped traffic on southbound Richmond Highway, at a substantial distance from the intersection of Mount Vernon Memorial Highway. A marked police car was traveling south in the left turn lanes on Richmond Highway when the 60-year-old, Alexandria-area man stepped in front of the police vehicle and was struck. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The officer was not injured.
Detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit and from Internal Affairs responded to the scene and continue the investigations.
Two southbound lanes of Richmond Highway at Mount Vernon Memorial Highway were closed for a period of time while the initial investigation was being conducted.
