College Graduation Gift
Posted by: The parents ()

He finally graduated from college. A good one. Took seven years. But he worked his tail off, has a job, no debt, and won't be living in our basement.

So what's a good graduation present for our boy?

No, not a car. Maybe $800-$1200 value.

Congratulations! Maybe...

- a trip somewhere he would enjoy
- a short cruise
- a day of pampering at a spa
- a gym membership
- a treadmill or elliptical
- a special piece of sports equipment
- a custom suit
- a fine leather briefcase
- a starter stock market portfolio

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Don't be so cynical. Several options:

1. The parents saved for years to send the kid to school.
2. The kid worked and saved for years to send himself to school. Why do you think it took 7 years to finish?
3. The parents are well-off but don't want to spoil the kid with an overly lavish present.
4. The kid has a trust fund from a wealthy relative (e.g., grandma).

Or any combination of the above.

A large dildo with a stickum cup under the balls. And three hundred gallons of vaseline. He can attach it anywhere and do himself as needed.

The "good job" he has now ... does it involve going halfway around the world to murder peasants on command?

Is he a newly minted tax parasite? A GS- bloodsucker?

See paul craig roberts article: Another phony jobs report from the government that lies about everything.

50% of the workforce have jobs that pay less than $30,000 a year.

So even if he is self-employed, how are his clients or patients going to pay him?

No student loans? Good on him and on you. At least he won't be a debt serf to the education establishment all his life.

So one cheer for you. You belong in a zoo. With the elephants and pandas too.

An AK-47 with some 30 round magazines would be a good investment.

I like the idea of a starter investment account.

For those who wonder how he did it:

Two years at NOVA (we paid)
Then two years working full time
Then three years in college while working part time
Excellent financial aid package (he rejected the loans)
Lived in a tiny apartment with others over a noisy street
Had no car
He is very proud to be independent, unlike many of his friends

Spend a little MORE??? Than $800-$1,200 for a WATCH??? I have a lot more and I don't spend over $100 for a watch. Typical spoiled yuppie.

The parents have the right idea. Invest in something that appreciates, not depreciates, and that teaches him how to manage money.

If he has a job (and with it, earned income) the best thing you can do for him is fund (or open) his Roth IRA, buying a stock index ETF or mutual fund. $1000 now could be $32,000 after average market returns when he hits 60. Inflation will obviously eat into the value of that, but it'll be worth a lot of watches and spa trips.

I like that. Etrade or something else? I wish I was more educated on investing; never took the time to learn.

Give him a ticket to Denver, CO. $800 gift certificate to REI for a backpack, hiking boots, camping stuff (bag, tent, stove, bottles);compact rental car for 2 weeks and $1500 cash. You could throw in a vaporizer given splif is legal there.

More expensive would be do the same but make it ticket to London with a Britrail pass for a month (that is what I did)...
