Dear West Springfield High School Families:

We have been deeply saddened by the death of one of our seniors, Jordan Trunfio, who died late this afternoon after an 18-month battle with brain cancer. During this time he has shown remarkable resolve and has been an inspiration to us all. On Monday, June 3rd, Jordan became the first person to graduate as a member of the Class of 2013, when his closest friends and family were present as he received his high school diploma. At the same time, Jordan’s West Springfield Spartan football jersey was honored, framed, and presented to him.

I am letting you know about Jordan’s death so that you can provide any support your children might need. Understanding death, especially the death of a peer, can be a very difficult experience for our students. Tomorrow, an FCPS crisis team will be available at WSHS throughout the day. The crisis team consists of psychologists and social workers who are trained to help students deal with their grief, individually and in small groups. We will continue to provide support to our students as long as necessary. A parent or guardian who senses that his or her child is having difficulty dealing with the death should contact the child's counselor at WSHS.

Jordan’s father will notify us of funeral arrangements and of the family's wishes for school involvement. We recommend that parents fully discuss the subject of Jordan’s death with their children. Parents should expect a wide range of emotions and feelings. The most important thing is to deal openly with the subject and comfort your children if they are upset. Please call the school if you would like to talk with one of the counseling professionals. We all share in this unfortunate grief, and our deepest condolences are with the family and friends of Jordan during this difficult time.

Jordan Trunfio and the number 58 will always remain a part of the history of West Springfield High School. His indomitable spirit will continue to be carried forth by the Class of 2013 and all who knew him. Jordan was an inspiration who warmed the hearts of everyone he knew, and he will be missed by us all. He will forever be a Spartan.

Respectfully,

Mark Greenfelder, Principal
