Northern Virginia Area Radio Stations
Posted by: bob ()

I listen to a very large variety of music, although when I'm driving I usually keep 99.5 or 101.1 on (I like their morning shows and the music they play during the evening commute). Is it just me or do they play their songs/tracks at a faster speed or tempo then written? It seems like the songs are 'faster' and in a slightly higher pitch then written. I download my music from iTunes so I am assuming that the version I am buying is legit, and somehow it sounds a little off...

If you want to know the truth about your query, post this on dcrtv.com Just email to dcrtv@dcrtv.com and watch the mailbag for the answer. You will recieve a polite answer from radio professionals at the very stations you are asking about.

Oh just forget it. Leave this question on Fairfaxunderground. The answers you recieve may not be accurate - but they will sure as hell will be entertaining.

Ain't no radio in NOVA anymore. There used to be though...WEEL (1310 on the AM dial!) in Fairfax City...top 10. The 45's that Jack Alix spun are "oldies" now.

They broadcast from the antennae at the American Legion on Oak St. Antennae are still there. They used to have dances and there

WAVA in Lee Hwy Arlington used to play hillbilly music (including live acts) back in the 50's. You could walk right in there and listen to the show and meet artists/djs.

This digital shit nowadays comes from where? I don't know.

Many "CHR" stations like Hot 99.5 will pitch their music up 2%. Its not so much to fit more in, but it sounds more uptempo...faster, especially dance oriented songs.

As for NoVA stations, WJFK is based out of studios in Fairfax City. They transmit from the "goalpost" tower at 66 and 495 in Merrifield.

About the only station I listen to now, is 102.7, Jack FM

It is out of Baltimore, but I can get it as far away as F'burg. A great station w/ few commercials.

The process is called "time compression;" you can get a 2:50 song played in about 2:38. The software also cuts pauses in spoken sentences out from the jocks so the station can squeeze more commercials into a 60 minute block.

I agree... getting Sirius satellite radio was one of the better decisions I made in 07... I can't imagine ever going back and listening to terrestrial radio.

I wish some millionaire bands ie u2 or Mettallica or someone of interest would BUY some radio stations and just format them the way their fans would want to hear radio played......

No, "Time compression" is for radio use and is done at the station by having voice and music going through a console programmmed with a delay. The console's software tightens up (compresses) what is fed through it before the prduct gets out on the air, giving everything a "speedier" sound.

Since U2 are not "US Americans" they cannot buy radio stations here.

Love our Sirius radio! The whole family presets the stations to their favorites, and we can always find something we like. It is definitely the way to go. I hear good things about XM too, so I hope they finally merge at some point.

I have had Sirius and XM for a couple of years. I like Howard Stern and the sports programming on Sirius, but prefer XM's music channels. If XM would have hired Howard Stern and fired those DOPES Opie and Anthony, they would have the perfect radio.

When our government gets off their corrupt ass and approves the merger between XM and Sirius, we will truly be able to listen to good quality radio.

I received Sat. Radio for Christmas, not necessarily something I would have purchased on my own BUT all I have to say is listening to the comedy stations helps when I have to sit behind some geezer for an hour at the drive-thru or wait in traffic for 2 hours because one of your girlfriends wrecked in light rain on 66.

HD Radio? HD Radio comes streaming in like a cheap MP3.. Same goes for ALL satellite radio transmissions as well. The low bit-rate streams are intolerable. Analog FM Radio Transmission delivers the highest fidelity broadcast available. Also, I enjoy local radio.. with a focus on local events, sports, news, etc.

Furthermore, who needs ANOTHER monthly bill in the mail.. jeez.

I never liked the idea of paying for radio either. Until I got Sirius. I initially got it so I could listen to Stern, but soon realized that there's so much great music programming on the other stations, that it's hard to get tired of it, like terrestrial radio. Plus I love that you can stream the Sirius feed online. It's well worth it, IMO, and I used to be someone who really hated the idea of paying for radio.

LOL @ paying for radio. That's like paying for a newspaper when you can get the same info on the paper's website for free.

It's actually not like your analogy, because satellite radio is giving you completely different content than terrestrial radio.

I'm not gonna argue though. I know my grandparents and their friends all laughed 40 years ago when people started paying for cable TV service. Paying for TV was unheard of and seemed ridiculous to alot of people back then.

Actually, I bet I could find most of what is offered on satellite radio on the internet, and stream it on my PC for free.

When cable TV first started out it was commercial-free. I bought it, and people laughed at me. But much like XM and Sirius are finding out, you can't run a profitable company without corporate advertisers. You will see that over time, satellite radio will become like terrestrial radio. Oh you will have 200+ channels to listen to, but you will also have 200+ channels to listen to commercials.

I'm with Kiev, wifi is the way to go. I'd also like to see the US implement the radio equivalent of a Tivo that way I can record the local shows I miss during the day and play them back on my way home (while fast-forwarding through the commercials).

Sirius also makes a similar device. It's an mp3 player that also records the satellite feed.

Driving around anywhere and picking up high speed WIFI, and listening to internet radio - now that would be cool.

I'm usually a news/talk listener with a weird obsession with weather forecasts (recorded or not) and one of the greatest features on Satellite is no matter what station I'm listening to I press this little, I like to call it magic, button and it turns to traffic and weather every 4 minutes for whatever location your in.
It's a nice feature seeing as I'm usually already entering the huge backup and 3 hour wait on 66 by the time WTOP gets around to telling me I should have taken 29 or abandoned the car and gone on foot.

And a side note to paying for radio. I was the creative lead on the website dtvtransition.org, you know, the commercials you see about cable going digital in 2009. Those of you who still using "bunny ears" to get free TV will have to buy cable or buy this converter box from the government. So much of the population is accustom to paying for services I find it hard to believe that some people out there have this feeling of entitlement like "I have the right to get it for free". No you don't, and get used to it, eventually we'll pay for all services. So, it's cool that you enjoy free radio, but don't come out all confused at people who choose to pay for it. So, I'm sorry for you who make $7.50 an hour and have to wait for the day after thanksgiving to hear Christmas music on the radio, I have here a channel dedicated to it and myself is gonna listen to it year round! yee haw.
