Powerball Fever: Jackpot Climbs to $350 Million
Where to play for Wednesday's drawing, odds of winning, and Virginia's past winners.
http://centreville.patch.com/articles/powerball-fever-jackpot-climbs-to-350-million-30c42ed9

You only need one $2 ticket to play.

With no Powerball ticket sold to match the Powerball jackpot numbers Saturday night, the multi-state mega-lottery has climbed to $350 million this week. The next drawing is Wednesday night.

The jackpot is won by matching all five white balls in any order, and picking the red Powerball number. Jackpot winners can either have their winnings paid out over 29 years in 30 payments or a lump sum payment.

When the Powerball climbs this high, it brings out a lot of people who don't normally play, said John Hagerty, spokesperson for the Virginia Lottery. (Virginia is one of 43 states that play; Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands play too.)

"We caution people to play responsibly — it only takes two dollars to play," he said. "Have some fun with it."

Higher jackpot amounts also mean more play by office pools, he noted. "We see a lot of friends getting together, pooling their money, it's that shared experience."

On the day of the next drawing, Wednesday (you'll have until 10 p.m. to buy a ticket before the 11 p.m. drawing), Virginia alone will sell 1.9 million tickets that day, Hagerty said. That's about 3,900 tickets per minute statewide.

Hagerty says that even if you don't win the jackpot, check your numbers for lesser prizes. Last year, Virginia saw $11 million in lottery winnings go unclaimed. Winners have 180 days from the day of the drawing to claim their prize.

Some people choose their Powerball numbers using all sorts of lucky numbers, using birth dates, ages, anniversaries and other numbers with special meaning, while others let the machine ("easy pick" in lotto lingo) do the number-choosing for them.

How do you pick your lotter numbers? Tell us in the comments below!

Fredericksburg's Dave Honeywell, Virginia's first Powerball jackpot winner (the state got into the game three years ago), let the machine do the picking when he bought a ticket in February at the airport in Richmond on his way out of town on a business trip. The next morning, at his hotel in Denver, he checked the numbers for the $217 million jackpot.

"I think my heart has started beating again," he told lottery officials.

"I thought he might be having a heart attack," his wife said.

On Feb. 14, the Honeywells returned to the spot where Dave bought the winning ticket, to receive their check. They had a choice of taking the full jackpot in 30 annual payments or a one-time cash option of $136.4 million before taxes for the $217 million jackpot. They chose the cash option.

The Powerball drawing on Nov. 28, 2012, produced the largest jackpot (annuity and cash values) in the game's history, $587.5 million annuity, or $384.7 million cash value.

In case you're wondering: The cash option for $350 million is $222.8 million.

What are your odds of winning the Powerball jackpot? One in 175.2 million. You're more likely to get struck by lightning (one in 700,000) or get fatally attacked by a shark (one in 3.7 million).

But, somebody's gotta win.

There was no winner in Saturday night's Powerball; the jackpot has climbed to $350 million. The next drawing is Wednesday night.Credit Powerball

In Virginia about $125 million after taxes.

And loss of all your friends and relatives.

I could live with that.

With the odds of one in 175.2 million, you have basically the same odds of winning whether or not you buy a ticket.

except you CANT win if you DONT play, so they really aren't the same odds are they?

I might throw out a couple bucks on the off chance something craZy happens, someone gets rich eventually off it, never know when it could be you.

In all honesty, if you won (meaning anyone here), would you share it with anyone? And if so, who?

Probably not directly, no. Might set up a trust or two that could be used for "sharing" but none of the post-tax $125 megabucks would go to any other person nor any charity.

"They" say, BTW, that you should take about 10% of your winnings and party like there is no tomorrow, because there actually might not BE a tomorrow. After that first 10% craziness you invest the rest, live off the ROI, and leave an estate for your heirs to quarrel over.

Lotteries, casinos, daily numbers, scratchers. They are nothing but another federal and state tax on those with really poor math skills.

The usual naive statement is:

>>> "They are nothing but another federal and state tax on the stupid"

This, of course, completely discounts the "thrill of the chase" and disregards the economic impact of the cost of that thrill on the thrill seeker.

Do you mind if we use this fine reasoning in our advertising?

Sounds perfect.

The thrill of the chase for a lottery is much like a hamster running in his wheel.

I'm sure the hamster is supremely enjoying itself.

In other enws, there seem to be an awful lot of duplicate posts lately (last month-ish)...wonder what's changed.

Call Melvyn Wilson is the king of the scratch-off ticket. The Virginia man recently won his fourth lottery prize of at least five figures, putting his total scratch-off winnings at more than $2 million. The Virginia Lottery said in a news release that Wilson won $500,000 in November 2004; $25,000 in March 2005; and $1 million in September 2005. Then he retired from his job as a postal worker.

Now 72, Wilson hit another $500,000 scratch-off prize on the Millionaire Mania game.

Some people have a horse shoe up their ass. I have seen this kind of luck first hand. The full story of MR Wilson is he was a gambling fool, the man spent a lot on that shit. Bottom line...He did win.

Stories like him keep the game alive in my head for some reason. Someone will win.
good luck to all who bought numbers for tonight's Powerball.

I remember Dr Phil, yeah I know the bald headed hump, saying something about money. You cannot solve money problems with money. Meaning if you cant control your spending you are no better off with a million than you are ten grand. A fool and his money and all that.

I saw a show on Discovery one night on lottery winners. One woman had won six million after taxes. Only one year later she was down to three million and had nothing to show for it. I suspect in five years she will be broke.

Other woman wins 14 million then loses it all back and more:

Keep buying those lottery tickets and going to the casinos. The more the stupid throw away their money, the less I have to pay in taxes.

Not really, Virginia made the same claim to support the lottery and it never happened. They just spend the extra money like they always do. Maryland got a huge influx of cash from their casinos and this year raised taxes again.

The Powerball Lottery lump sum prize is now up to $200+ megabucks.

AFTER taxes.

Nice ROI for the winner!

It's not that hard to hold on to money if you use half an ounce of common sense. Just hire an accountant and they'll tell you how much you can spend. If you win a big lotto like this one, you can live nicely on the interest forever and never touch the principal.

If you win a smaller lottery and think you're going to live like a rich celebrity, you'll have problems. But if you have basic math skills and just look at it as being set in the middle or upper-middle class for life, you should be fine.

If you can't discipline yourself to live on $1 million, $500K, or $150K a year then you're a moron.

Except for the teachers who never make enough. Just ask them, they will tell you.
