I was driving down Sydenstricker Rd. in Springfield this past weekend, on the corner of Etta and Sydenstricker is a house with a torn blue tarp covering more than half the roof. Looks like it's been there for a long time, doesn't look like a house fire. Anyone know what this eye sore is about?

Yeah, their insurance must suck. It has been almost a year since the fire. The tarp that WAS covering the roof is torn and mostly hanging inside the house now.

I thought the same thing when I drove by there a week or so ago. I guess the insurance company could have some reason to think the fire was not accidental and the whole thing may be tied up while they investigate and go to court.

The fire started in the attic and was caused by a faulty attic fan. http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fr/news/2012archive/2012_44.htm

There is ongoing litigation between the the homeowner's insurance company, the homeowner, and the manufacturer of the attic fan. The insurance company is claiming that the homeowner knew the attic fan was faulty and was therefore negligent in not having it repaired or replaced, and so they have no liability to repair the home. The homeowner is suing the insurance company and the manufacturer of the attic fan.

Meanwhile, the property recently went into foreclosure. If the repair issue is not resolved within six months, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors can order the home be demolished.

Wow....good stuff.

How could the homeowner know, or be expected to know, that an attic fan would cause a fire? Would he really have stayed in the house with that knowledge? I thought in a situation like this the insurance company would take care of the homeowner and then try to recover from the manufacturer. Not true?

That resident had a couple of expensive cars parked out front. Guess it wasn't so important to do basic household maintenance.

I live about a mile from that house.

I think that the owner didn't carry homeowners or didn't have certain riders on the homeowners policy.

I think it needs to be demolished. However, the county (taxpayers) shouldn't have to foot the bill.

If its demolished the county will paid for that work and then put a lien on the title. When the land sells the cost will be recouped.
