Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I've been scouring the VA Statutes and DMV website, but I can't find anything that exactly spells out..
What happens when you don't re-register a vehicle on time? My car failed emissions last week, and my registration expired over the weekend. I'm planning on getting it fixed- if it wasn't something electrical (O2 Sensor) I'd have already repaired it myself- and I'm curious if there are any penalties associated with registering a vehicle late?
And on a side-note, what are the penalties for operating a vehicle without proper registration? The current emissions penalty is $600+ dollars (that's money you have to pay to a certified technician before you can qualify for an emissions waiver...) and in four weeks time I'm leaving the country for three months- if it's expensive it would make sense to repair it when I come home later this year..
Expired registration isn't that bad, I've always just gone and paid a month or two late. I don't remember if I had to pay a late fee or not.
It's no insurance or no VA license that is the big one. Problem is that if you park in a complex (apartment\condo) they will see expired tags and want to ticket and tow it.

If your car fails emissions, you can get a ONE TIME extension of your tags. If your tags ran out in May and you get the extension in June...it will be good until the end of July. They charge you a pro-rated fee for 2 months (about 5 bucks or so). You get a July sticker to put over your May stickers and your renewal month changes to July permanently.

I actually did see this on the DMV website, but there's no further information on how to accomplish it. It's impossible to proceed in the vehicle registration online without a valid emissions inspection. Do you then need to physically visit a DMV location to ask for the extension? Meaning, take a day off of work to sit around?
I have let cars expire and then later, gone and renewed the tags. No big deal, no penalty.
Then again, they are in my garage and not on a public street or private (common) parking lot.
I hope this helps.
Also, O2 sensors will unscrew from the exhaust pipe and are very easy to replace. Newer cars however, can have as many as four o2 sensors, with the advent of OBDII.
