South Lakes girls basketball team held off defending Virginia Class AAA state champion Oakton Thursday night for a 48-46 victory, earning a spot in the Northern Region final and a place in the 2013 state tournament.
The game was tied at 32 going into the fourth quarter, but the Seahawks scored the next nine points.The Cougars pulled within one point with five second left in the game, but junior Collette Toma hit free throws with seconds remaining to seal the victory.
South Lakes makes its first trip to the regional final and state tourney since 1986, when Seahawks coach Christy Winters Scott was the teams star player.
Gabrielle Schultz and Abigail Rendle led the Seahawks with 13 and 11 points respectively. Oakton's Lindsay Abed scored 17, including crucial points to narrow the gap in the fourth quarter.
