You haven't been paying attention. Metro was great when its purpose was to bring white workers and tourists from Fairfax, Alexandria, and Montgomery County into DC and home again. The day they opened the green line into Southeast and PG county that all changed. Now Metro brings crime to us. Look at Pentagon City, Springfield Mall (RIP), and Union Station now compared to 20 years ago. Watch what will happen to Tysons next year. Do you really want that at Fair Oaks?

If metro was run like a serious business instead of a minority work project they wouldn't have the massive budget and maintenance problems they have now.

With the average metro ride downtown from say, vienna being about $6-7 now each way, might as well get a $1000 hooptie that gets good gas mileage (hondas/toyotas small chevys and fords), put liability on it, and sit in traffic wit the rest of us.

$6x2 (each way)=$12 per day x 20 days per month=$240 x 12 months=$2,880.

Cheaper to keep her. And you can sit in cool ac/warm heat, enjoy your coffee and radio, let your gps guide you out of traffic rather than walk on the tracks, and you can pull over and pee anytime.

Not if Metro wanted to stay in business, the rates would still have to be competitive or no one would use them.

Clearly you don't ride metro and are a paranoid freak because bringing white workers and tourists to DC is pretty much what the west part of the orange line does.

Extending the metro to Fair Oaks would be great. It would be costly but I say just raise the gas taxes to fund it. It would serve a double purpose. More rail and running the paranoid me me me idiots out of Fairfax. Can't go wrong with that one.

Another post by an idiot who doesn't know shit about metro. It is not 6-7 dollars it is 5 something dollars dummy and that is only if you are going during rush hour and assuming you aren't just going a few stops.

No I don't want to sit in traffic because I can't read in traffic. Not to mention the metro is faster. Why would you want more traffic anyway? You do realize that would only make your commute longer right?

Again your statistics are wrong. You also forget many employers pay for metro. Oh and by the way it will cost you that much to drive anyway.

You can't listen to music on the metro? Walking on the tracks-never happened to me? Oh and if your stuck on the highway you can't just pee there either unless you are talking about in your pants or in the woods which is for the animals not for me.

You'll eat that budget in parking alone in DC. Beyond that you forget operation cost of a vehicle like insurance, gas, maintenance, all of which equate to about 55 cents per mile when you include the amortized depreciation of your vehicle.

PS the maximum fare is 6 bucks, no matter where you go.

More stupid. Clearly you've never lived in Pentagon City because it is a very nice and very safe neighborhood. Yes there is shop lifting at the mall but it has zero impact on the lives of those who live there. Living their is extremely safe. Crime other than at the mall is pretty much almost non-existant. Having the metro there has caused prices to go up which in turn make it a very safe neighborhood. People in Herndon, Centreville, Chantilly, Mannassas, and more etc didnt' want the public transportation and look at what they have created for themselves. The gangs that used to be in Arlington left and went there. So the only question is why wouldn't you want to have a lower crime area by encouraging metro rail to come there?

Metro is disgusting. one big petri dish. I use to use metro all the time, I stopped years ago, then I thought I would give it a shot going to the ball game. It was bad, I would have paid the $50 for parking at the stadium.
I guess if you use metro for short trips it's ok, Maybe I just don't like being crammed in asshole to elbow with people.

This is a theory I've heard before, but I've never seen any compelling support for it. It defies logic that thugs would spend what, 45 minutes? -- including a train change -- to go all the way to Springfield Mall to cause trouble. Yeah, the mall turned to crap and closed, but blaming it on Metro seems a stretch. And it was never that great in the first place. Plus shopping malls in general are in trouble across the country.

The thing is, Metro doesn't have to run like a serious business. Regardless of how poorly it does (or how much it wastes on crap), it's always going to be bailed out by the federal government. It is a minority work project; 97% of its employees are black. Some of them are very helpful people. Others sit there and unhelpfully provide you information or are downright nasty.

How to fix Metro (in 10 simple points)
1. EVERY station is designed to have 8 car trains. Buy more cars and create 8 car trains
2. Actually enforce the rules. I take the Metro and see at least 5-10 violations per day.
3. Get rid of the "peak of the peak." Most bright people avoid it by working later.
4. Fix the intercoms and teach the drivers how to pronounce the stops. The Judiciary Square stop should be pronounced as such. It is NOT JudAiciary Square.
5. Hire some non-minorities.
6. New turnstiles. Enough said
7. Flat rate, I've helped 5 tourists this month alone because the fares are so confusing.
8. Eliminate the paper fare card surcharge. It's just a way to screw tourists.
9. Fire the station managers. They do nothing as it is. If you have a flat rate, their services are no longer needed.
10. Let the doors open if something gets stuck in them.
