How many services are available for free/reduced lunch qualifiers?
Posted by: CCCCC ()
Date: March 24, 2013 07:13AM

I am considering quitting my job so that my husband and I qualify for the County's free/reduced lunch program. Every time I go to sign a child up for something, I notice that if we qualified for that we would be entititled to many services for next to nothing. I start to wonder why I am working? What are all the services that would be available?

free/reduced lunch at school

Fairfax County Parks & Rec classes: I'd get a free class for each kid every quarter for next to nothing.

No fees for any of the field trips, etc at the elementary school

I assume we'd qualify for "EBT" food stamps

Medicaid (state)

free pre-school via Headstart

Fx Co summer school classes for $75 instead of $750

free cell phone (250 minutes) and 1000 free texts thanks to feds

If you become a prostitute, that's also free income and lots of quarters for parking!

Wow we sure are creating lazy mooches in this society. So sick of parents like who want to pop out kids and then make others pay for them for you. If you want to quit your job cut back, coupon and don't become a bunch of welfare queens and kings. Don't think the other kids won't figure out or notice that your all on welfare either.

When you turn 65 be sure and start bitching about people who have managed to retire more comfortably than you because of their ambition.

At the school where my daughter goes there is a girl that at 17 has had two kids. They are by the same dad who is a student there also. When she asked her how they have money for food, diapers and where do they live she said she get s voucher for all the babies food, milk and stuff. She also gets a check for 875 per child a month. She said they do not have to pay the doctor. The girl also told her that mom comes from el Salvador and the county gives her a place to stay and mom money. Mom does not work. One question needs to be asked is how many illegals are we supporting.

If those kids were born here they are 100% legal citizens so under our current law they are 100% entitled to those benefits. Remember that education and social assistance programs cost nothing, they are an investment in our future that pays back ten fold or more. The reason we have so many of our citizens in prison and in poverty is that we did not spend enough on education and social programs in the past.

Most of the student having kids parents are here illegally. Ask anyone in the social service work place. Also when they know their kids are pregnant they send th me here from their country. Also the same. Is true for the kids that have special needs they are sent here from their country to live with someone so we take care of them the rest of their lives.

Not a waste at all. On average 61% of the kids that receive free and reduced lunch along with WIC and EBT grow up to get decent jobs and end up paying 10 to 1000 times back in taxes to this country than what they received. Kids that are left to live on the street grow up to live out their lives in one of our prisons or mental institutions costing the taxpayers millions. These social programs are one the the greatest bargains ever for taxpayers and there should be more of them.

Its now 2000 free texts with the obamaphones. I know a girl lives in PA. She has a public housing townhome that would fetch $700,000 easy in Fairfax. It has a garage and large soaking tub along with ceiling fans and top notch appliances. The public housing there is not like here, it is mostly white people. She has two kids that are now grown so she has the three bedrooms to herself. No one ever checked up to see if she still required all three rooms living alone. She hasnt worked since she was a teenager and is now in her 40's. Work is most def for suckers

The stupid people who pop out kids at 17 should pay for their own kids. Why are we paying stupid people to breed? Why shouldn't people pay for their own kids?

It's completely out of control. They need shelter and don't want to work: you get a one bedroom apartment in a building full of other losers like yourself. You don't want to feed yourself and your kids: you get rice and beans. Watch the welfare queens and kings drop like flies. So annoying to see them holding up lines bitching about I can't buy this or that with food stamps when the item is crap anyway and then getting in their 50,000 dollar ugly Escalade or other loser mobile.

Take it from one who was in the program just the last few months of 2012 (not by choice- laid off and have a young child at home gotta do something!)-

TANF (temp assistance to needy families formerly known as welfare) pays all of $323 a month for one child. 2 might make $389 (see- 2 and 3 person families at the bottom of this page= http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dfs/ss/tanf.htm )

How did the other lady mentioned above get $875 per child per month???? I dont think even SSI pays that much even if the kids were disabled!

But back on point- if you are in TANF, you HAVE TO participate in something for 30 hours a week. Work a job or do their job training seminars or be in school full time-and they DO verify and are QUICK to cut you off if you miss even one hour of training of schol!!! I already have a bachelors, so I started doing their seminars, but they are disgustingly simple- like how to put together a resume or how to use monster- I can do all that from home! But no, since they were giving that $ 323/month I had to spend my $7 of gas a DAY getting to those seminars 16 days out the month to keep my $323 grant! (16 daysx$7= 112 so 323-112 I effectivaly got only $202 amonth to work with!!! I asked for transportation assistance but ironically where the seminars are held and the time (like 8am) it would be IMPOSSIBLE for me to get there via public transportation on time on the other side of the county- so i HAD TO drive to make it on time. They DID give me free childcare to use during that time which helped- but it was only 9-5 monday-friday basically.

Housing- everyone talks about section 8 (sharon! LOL) but what she doesnt tell you is there is a 4-year waiting list if you add your name to the list right now- but rent is due TODAY and taking home $202/month from ffx county what rent would that pay? Obviously I lost my apartment and had to move back in with family. Now I have bad credit too (of course they didnt offer any rent assistance citing those funds were spent too-probably on all the illegals that came by earlier that morning walking out the office with smiles and checks in hand right before I got there).

Tired of all the hoops I was jumping to only get $323 cash, 250 foodstamps, childcare while I was in the "seminars" and medicaid (for the child not me) (that was all I got! No obamaphone here!) and thinking I wanted to get out of the system right away and get back to real work again, I happily took a job at walmart making $9.50 an hour (and almost didnt get it since Im overqualified with a degree and 10 years real experiance in the corporate world, not retail....)- but guess what- as soon as I was hired, TANF said I MADE TOO MUCH MONEY so my TANF was cancelled, they cut my food stamps from 250/mo (me and 1 child) down to $60 a month, and booted me out of the childcare assistance since "they didnt have room to assist people who were working right now theres a waiting list only space for TANF participants right now"- so for me to go to work I am paying a nighttime sitter $160/week (which is CHEAP and I was LUCKY to find her, childtime during the day is $250/week!)- and I only take home ~900 a MONTH after taxes-if i get a full 40 hours- usually get like 30. No medicaid, little food stamps, thats it. SO now I am effectively working for $300 a month AGAIN take home (after taking out for daycare) and I am in the SAME BOAT.

I am VERY tempted to quit and just go back on TANF- been "overqualified" for most other positions ( I SURE AM looking every day!) and walmart is NOT going to support me, I can barely pay the daycare with it so I CAN go to work! I feel like I am working for NOTHING and I can see why people just sit on welfare for a long while. I was only on TANF for 4 months but quite frankly that was less stress than working at walmart dealing with the lower levels of society for 5-7 hours a day then coming home with my paycheck, paying the sitter, filling up the gas tank, then counting the $100 I have left to last us 2 weeks to eat and everything....Lord forbid I had to pay rent too! And getting a 2nd job- well thats another sitter to pay!

ANy thoughts-rebuttals welcome!

You are not aware of the other options that let you avoid working for a living. I know a woman who is excused from having to work or look for work. She has seven kids and in the governments opinion she is just not employable. She lacks skills and uses the I must watch my kids so I dont have time to work excuse.

I don't know. I know a family who receives free and reduced lunches for their kids. The family lives in a large single family home, takes regular trips to Disney, they eat out, live well, enjoy plenty of extracurricular classes for their kids, enjoy salons and facials on a regular basis, etc.

They are playing the system. They seem to be experts at it. The system needs to be overhauled and restructured. Too many people are taking advantage of it.

I also don't think the schools have much recourse to determine who's really qualified for free and reduced lunches. So much of that personal information is private. Plus, if these families aren't legally married, the spouses income is not looked out so these "single moms" appear dirt poor when really they're living off welfare AND a guy's paycheck.

Why didn't you save up money before you were laid off? And don't tell me you couldn't its the oldest lame excuse in the book. Do you have cable? Do you have a smart phone? Do you have an SUV or Minivan? Could you have chosen to live someplace less expensive? Do you buy make-up?

Exactly and this describes way to many probably even most families in this area who are on welfare. One time I watched this lady with a starbucks in one hand and a smart phone in the other hand yell into the phone at the welfare people about her welfare check being late. Then how the @#$%^ did you afford to go to starbucks?

Its time to scale back these services to the basics. Don't have food-you get rice and beans. Not more I why did they donate chick-peas. Really your hungry you need food you'll eat it. Don't have internet-that's why we have libraries. Wait your turn. We have a bus system-use it.

By the way this isn't a local story but a national one where a woman was bitching about how she was treated for using food stamps. Then someone went to her facebook page and pulled pictures of her vacationing at St. George's or somewhere. So much for that stupid welfare queen sob story.

Since when do food stamps, welfare checks and ESL classes free. Want to know why prison and poverty happen? The government rewards the broken family where the father is absent. Now you have a so called president that wants you to blame all your problems not on your lack of personal responsiblity but on anyone better off than you on the presumption that you deserve everything they worked for.

OK you want details...

Was laid off in Feb 2012, making 38k. At that salary paying 1k rent to stay in FFX county, I barely made daycare, electric, food, and gas at that salary. I did manage to save 6 mo. living expenses but burned through them when my son got sick (no insurance, remember?) My unemployment paid the rent but it was hard to keep up with the thearipies he needed after the accident so I had to choose to continue therapy and get him on medicaid but lose the apt. and go back to moms to afford it. No, we didnt have cable (love QUBO!) free internet from my (ex-) job, and I am still using my motorla razr all I do is text and call anyways. Dont even have a GPS in my (paid for 2004) corolla yet LOL. So YES I lived frugally before. All my clothes come from target- so dont assume I am one of those lazy ones.

I WAS employed in business, HAVE a crappy job now and DO have a degree so don't put me with the lazy mothers. I am not looking to get over anyone, I just want to SURVIVE UNTIL I find a BETTER job that can cover us. I am trying to be HONEST and go to work at walmart for now- but things look dimmer and dimmer everyday the employees I contact/get interviews with say I'm over qualified every time. I am still in my 30's so its not age discrimination either! Could be something else but I am not going there.

Ok, you may then have a legit claim in your case. But your the exception and not the rule. That being said it would have been smart to have gotten insurance even if you had to squeeze more.

They don't cost anything!!!???? And they pay back ten fold or more???!!! Why is anyone working if "free" services are such an investment?

That sounds like what Nancy Pelosi said about unemployment payments!!

I forgot to add:

Sharon Bulova's subsidized luxury housing to the list of benefits

How do they do it???

Some people need help and some do not.

I work at a school where parking permits cost regular students $200. If you qualify for free lunch, it cost $20. I am the person that sees the applications that include the cars they are driving. Had a "free lunch" student apply for a permit the other day driving a 2013 Accord. Had one in the past driving a 2012 Acura TSX. When I questioned them about why they qualified for free lunch and could afford to drive a new car, they just laughed. This is typical not rare.

I have spoken to the person running the free and reduced program in the county I work, and she says she does not have enough personnel to check each and every application for free/reduced lunch. So, whatever income they put on the form is taken as true. So............take advantage of this shit like all the towel heads are. No one will check.

There used to be some shame attached to living off others. Now it is a badge of honor to game the system the best. Obama calls them heroes for living on food stamps and welfare while decrying the ones who pay taxes as evil for thinking they should desire to keep as much of their pay as possible.

Look at the forms. Applicants only need to put last four digits of SSN. There is a hot line if someone in the school thinks people are lying on the forms. Just call or write to the fraud dept. they will check it out.

I used to stop at a 7-11 for coffee in the morning. The store was near a public housing unit in DC. On the window was a flier for the complex advertising a charter bus trip to Atlantic City. Tell me how bad off the residents can be if they have a charter bus to go gambling.

I'm so tired of paying for people that want to take no responsibility for their situation and are a drain on society. I pretty much grew up with nothing and could have easily lived off of public assistance and squeezed out a few kids to take even more from hard working tax payers. Instead, I worked two, sometimes three jobs and went to college part time to earn a degree. Took me almost 10 years, but I finished and now have a good job making well over six figures.

That is quite easy if you are a single person with no kids. Once kids come in the picture it all changes. It is next to impossible to work 2-3 jobs if you don't have someone in your family willing to watch your kid for free. Not to mention most daycares charge upwards of $200/week and when you're only making retail wages...that eats up 2/3 of your check right there. Then to work the second job, you need to find ANOTHER sitter to cover that time.
TL:DR kids make life a little harder (but worth it in the end).

We do it by working very hard. The white peoples pay us cash for many services. Americans are to fat and lazy to understands this. We loves this country! Soon it will be our country.

Given the chance I would never have started working for a living. I would have signed up for the section 8 luxury condo first off. Top it off with food stamps, obamaphone, free medical and dental. Right now it is tough to make ends meet and my premium for health care is $580 a month.

Why wouldn't they be, no one checks to see if the information is false. A school I worked at had a kid driving to school in a Mercedes convertible and then argue with the cafeteria staff what he what entitled to with his free lunch. That is correct not one is checked on, head to your school tomorrow for free stuff, everyone else does.. This includes parking spots, school activities , graduation etc etc etc etc

If you are broke, don't have sex and don't have kids.

Every child in school should get free lunch and breakfast. So much money is spent on education and much of it is wasted because of poorly nourished students. It would be in the taxpayers best interest to feed them all.

I live in PWCO and my child qualifies for crappy free food for breakfast and lunch.

I make too much for Food stamps

I make too much for Medicaid, even for my child alone.

I never got any free day care of any kind.

I never got a free field trip for my kids, and am always the one they are asking to bring more and more supplies and food for parties.

I also do not qualify for free cell phones either.

And even though my GAI is 11K/ year, i do not qualify for a housing discount either.

Oh Ya, and my ex owes over 20K in child support and has a job, and collects disability, veteran benefits, and unemployment (because they lies and they believe they are unemployed).

But we do not qualify for help collecting back support because I " Make too much" and they consider the awarded child support as my income too!.

We do get free breakfast and lunched though at the school.

It is illegal to insist that documentation be provided with the application.

in all of FCPS there is not a single person whose job is to investigate FRL fraud accusations.

Don't believe me? Google "FRL fraud arrest Fairfax."
