Worst Walmart in Fairfax County - Nominations please
Posted by: Grey Poupon ()
Date: March 02, 2013 07:16AM

I vote the one in Kingstowne. The thermostat must be set at 100 degrees since the place is sweltering. I guess it is to make the third world customers that are from humid tropical stinkholes feel at home. The place is a disaster with the aisles blocked with unpacked boxes of inventory. Usually only three to five registers are open. I have seen customers eating from potato chip bags on the shelf and one guy opened a container of ham and ate a couple of slices and put it back in the cooler.

If the CIA wants a new method of torture for prisoners they should subject them to a job at this store. The employees are angry as hell not that I blame them and seem ready to snap at any minute.

The only thing I wonder about is the overheating. Wally is VERY close with a buck and utilities are expensive. All WalMart store HVAC is controlled from Wally Central in Arkansas. Must be a malfunction in that store.

my vote definitely goes to the Kingstowne store. It is dark and dirty. U get that nastly feeling right when you walk into the store. The drink area in the McDonalds, in the store, smells like someone "threw up".

I'm proud to say that I have only been in Walmart once in my life and have spent $0.00 with them.

Another vote for Kingstowne. I used to go there regularly when I worked at Springfield Mall, then I found the Burke store and it was so much nicer. Now I usually go to the one in Fairfax for the full grocery section.

I have never been in a Walmart during my 60 years on this planet. I remember what happened to small town America decades back due to Walmart.
A few of us still have scrupples and a little dignity.

Not everyone can be that lucky. To many every dollar must count. I know the media comes out with these stats that Fairfax is one of the richest counties in the country but not everyone here is making six figures. When a product sells at Wegmans for five dollars and Walmart for three the choice is simple for those people.

Do you include time, fuel and enviromental issues in the savings?
Lost American jobs due to most Walmart products manufactured in China.
Do you really need the products?

If the other stores stopped overcharging for products then it would be simple to choose going to those stores but if Walmart can sell things for almost half the price you need to wonder how much these other stores are really making.

A related question: Several of the Northern Virginia Walmarts seem to have a substantial number of African employees (NOT African-American, but African, who speak to each other in tribal languages). Who are these people? Is the State Department issuing work visas to people to come here and get jobs as Walmart clerks? Are they here on student visas and working under the table? Are they here illegally? I support legal immigration of pretty much anyone with education and skills that benefit the U.S., but I'm not sure we need to import Walmart clerks.

Since you asked, at a time when unemployment hovers around 9 percent, and when Americans without advanced education and skills are especially hard hit, I am curious about what's going on behind the scenes when I see obvious recent immigrants doing jobs at Walmart that could be done by Americans. I have not observed similar employee profiles at Target, Costco and other discount retailers.

As far as where the products are made they are the exact same product sold in Safeway and Giant but for dollars more per item. Its not like people on fixed incomes have much of a choice.

The Walmarts in the Washington area are far worse than Walmarts in other parts of the country. The ones here are dirty and the shelves are disorganized. When I lived in North Carolina the Walmarts were actually quite nice. My theory is that there are more retail options in the DC area so only poor people shop there, while in other parts of the country there are fewer options so more middle class people shop at Walmart in those areas so the stores are kept nicer.

This is very true. In fact, the more rural the area the nicer the store tends to be. Kind of the opposite of what you'd expect.

Apparently rednecks don't trash the store as badly as the arrogant, self-entitled foreigners (Indians, Pakistanis, and mexicans) in Northern VA.

You ever been to the one in Panama City Beach? Apparently it's the busiest in the nation, but it also is one of the dumpiest. When the kids are there, they sell beer right in the parking lot from the trucks lined up for blocks --- never once check ids...

There are people that wouldn't be alive without WalMart.

Sure Walmart screws their employees, but they also screw their suppliers and sometimes that's a good thing. Take pharmaceuticals, for example. Big Pharma and the drug chains have been gouging people for years on generic drugs, until WalMart came out with the $4 prescription. Everybody does it now, but if Wally hadn't done it, NOBODY would have. There are uninsured people that wouldn't have access to life-saving drugs without WalMart.

In my case, I am an uninsurable type-1 diabetic (as are all T1s in this stinking fucking country). I have to test my glucose up to a dozen times a day and the test strips are very expensive (close to $60 for 50 at CVS). Walmart has introduced an accurate test meter that uses $9 for 50 strips. They also sell a accuarate home A1C test for 9 bucks. Labs like Quest charge hundreds for it.

I'm sure few reading this has the slightest clue about diabetes, but it's a big deal what Wally has done for us.

Walmart sucks. I wouldn't know which is the worst because I refuse to go into any Walmart. It is a waste of money to buy cheap junk that is just going to break and cost me twice as much because I have to replace it 5x as often, as something of quality.

None of you guys have been to the Wal-Mart at Route 1 & Sherwood Hall Ln. near Mount Vernon, have you? Holy shit, what a disaster that place is. The only thing more surly than the patrons are the employees.

On the flip side, I go to the Sterling branch on a pretty regular basis, and find it to be relatively harmless, especially if you go early on a weekend. A couple of stores down on the northern neck aren't so bad, either - Tappahannock and Kilmarnock in particular.

People trashing trashy stores like Walmart, Kmart, etc really do NOT get it - decades ago Mad Magazine ran one of their "articles" on super stores and, even at that distant time, spoofed the messiness with a pointedly-correct observation that it is DESIGNED to set a certain mood in shoppers.

There is a method to the madness.

I shop Walmart about once every two weeks. I just mentally prepare myself to see things one does not normally see. Like people eating food off the shelf, moms beating their kids, intoxicated people spitting on the floor and kids riding display bikes down the aisles. As long as you mentally prepare you can adapt to it. I am not a Fairfax resident who makes six figures so I must make every dollar count and Wally World for most day to day items is much cheaper than other stores.

there's nothing wrong with shopping at walmart

but to judge them like one is any better than the other (I say, Gordo, I do find the Walmart workers in Northern Neck to be of a much higher caliber of ghetto trash and smoke a better quality of meth than do the workers in Hybla Valley)..............or to act like you are surprised by how trashy they could be (OH MY! 3rd worlders................in A WALMART!!?!?!?!).........that's the craziness I'm laughing at on this thread.

Fairfax City Walmart, by far the worst. You need a passport to get in, then the aisles are all about 1/2 the size of other stores.

Kingstowne Walmart is pretty ghetto. Worse yet, it's like third world ghetto. Once I happened to stop in the Walmart in Centerville and I couldn't believe the difference. It was clean and orderly -- with friendly, helpful staff. A pleasant shopping experience. Whoever runs the Centerville store should give lessons to the managers of the Kingstowne store.

This homeless guy at McDonald's. and those kids where running around like its a playground. Someone left an half empty bottle of soda pop just laying around, don't even think they paid for it. A girl eating for free and readings like its a library.

I just wanted to say the picture of the "homeless guy in McDonalds" is all wrong. The guy works two jobs, and pays his rent. He's just slow, and pretty well known in most of Springfield and Kingstowne 'cuz he's EVERYWHERE all the time.

The problem with Walmart is the staff they hire...

They will hire "Paco" before they hire "Lisa"...to Paco, Walmart is the best job he can get and Paco won't leave because $8 is the best he can do and since Paco isn't educated Walmart doesn't have to worry about Paco leaving. Paco probably also has people in his home country to send money to.

They will hire "Muhammad" too because he will happily work for $8/hour- knowing he has the help of his 5 roommates to pay the rent.

Lisa on the other hand is in college and Walmart knows the moment Lisa graduates (or finds a more suitable job) Lisa is gone with the wind. Or Lisa could have been laid off from her high-paying clerical job and is now working at Walmart as a "stopgap". Lisa is more ambitious and will probably move on quickly to an office job or management so walmart is reluctant to have Lisa on board knowing she just might leave in 6 months...

Paco and Muhammad will be walmart employees for life pretty much- as it is the best they can do. Lisa will do her 6 months at walmart, find a better job, and go on to be well-off and middle class.

Not to mention Paco and Muhammad tells all his friends about the walmart job and they end up taking over....like you notice now how all mcdonalds are like 99% hispanic and you dont see a white/black (african-american, NOT african)/ person working there? bingo.

And they bring all their third-world ideas about sanitation, etc with them....

The quality of the staff=the quality of the store.

The Kingstowne Walmart is terrible -- messy, disorderly, crowded with foreigners day and night.

You want a show? Go to the 24 Hour Wally World in Culpeper VA on a Saturday night! More mutants per sq foot than any other Walmart in VA. Endless supply of obese white whales (how do they get so fat in just 16 or 17 years?) in tank tops and short shorts or stretch pants with..... black guys. Lots of bad tatts, horrible clothing choices, and just all around complete dysfunction for a public place.

And then there are the employees....................

I love the Haymarket Walmart. Not as many foreigners as the one in Fairfax, and they are allowed to sell guns! unlike the Fair lakes one. I am going to go to the Haymarket Walmart for now on.

Is there a difference between shitty and shittier? If you are shopping at Walmart you are helping end America as we know it, and you are low life trash. How about, you spend the extra 15 fuckin cents and help support the local american economy instead. Is that so much tougher, considering this areas affluence?

Walmart is a great store. Great stock of most every household need at great prices. If you can find one not populated with third worlders -- it'll be clean and orderly too.

I'd have to agree that the walmart in Kingstowne is pretty bad. But the one on Route 1 in Mount Vernon area was a mess too. Haven't been there in awhile. Maybe it's closed down by now.

Um, Your whole argument doesn't really make sense. Seems "Paco" and "Mohammed" would do better quality work because they need the job more than "Lisa", and are planning to stay employed there longer than she is. Also, most other cultures generally have a much better work ethic than Americans'.

Yeah, I recognized the dude in that photo too and thought it was funny because he does seem to be everywhere lol.

Unfortunately, he always makes really sexual comments to me when he sees me, and it makes me very uncomfortable. A lot of the times he is with his girlfriend too, and it's normally at the metro station so plenty of other people witness it. I get that he has some sort of disability, but it doesn't mean it's ok for him to sexually harass me like that. I'm sure I can't be the only one. He seems high functioning enough to know it's not okay...

Please tell us where you shop that does NOT have Chinese made products, of the same type found in Walmart. Even if you shop at the Apple Store or high end clothing retailers, you still find goods made in China. Blaming Walmart for importing goods (that people actually buy) is silly.

Another vote for Kingstowne. Third-world shit hole.

The last time I went in there, about five feet into the store, right near the ever-crowded-with-third-world-shitstains returns counter, I was hit with a smell that triggered combat flashbacks. The smell of decay, vomit, human waste.... hard to describe, but it was the smell of death.

I had to suppress my own urge to vomit and I turned around and go the hell out of there. Only to be immediately accosted by a pandhandler outside the door.

Before this incident, I would try to only go there on Sunday mornings. All of the illegals are in church. And all of the durka-durkas are too lazy to be up in the morning and/or are praying for forgiveness for the homosex they engage in on Thursday nights or something.

I meant the store. But now that you mention it, the people there are pretty slovenly.

The Hybla Valley location is bad, but I think Kingstowne outclasses it in the all of the measures of crappiness.

It's weird though since the Kingstowne store, while not in a wealthy area, is in a fore more affluent area than the Rt 1 location. The throngs of human waste that work and shop there -are they representative of the Kingstowne populace? Or does the store draw from other areas? Springfield? Van Dorn corridor? The asphalt slum around South County HS?

If by filthy and creepy you mean the customers I think I know why. Walmart doesnt charge a membership fee and its easier to steal from Walmart than Costco. Costco has huge bulk items and you cant find that under your jacket.

Yeah, the cartons of cigarettes are a bitch to get under your coat, no doubt about it.
