Plumber said up to $900 to swap out water heating element

I mean wtf. This happened last weekend saturday. I had to pay the 69 service call but went to home depot and bought the 17 dollar heating element and installed it my self. They wouldn't give me a labor/ parts quote , they kept pushing different "packages" ranging from 400 to 900 for a longer warranty on a $17 heating element. I asked for a labor quote and he said $201 an hour and he might go over if of didn't use a package. How do these scum bags sleep at night and what retards pay that? I mean some retards must be paying it ?

It's cheaper to buy a brand new water heater.

List the company's name so people know not to call them in the future.

Complete install by Lowe's - $300. New water heater 65g - $500. For a total of $800 you are still better off going with Lowe's.

Lowes just farms out the work to other contractors. Rates at $201 were probably weekend or holiday rates.

And yes, contractors are all snakes in the grass. They basically charge what they think they can get from you.

Where do you live? After our lower heating elements went out in our water heater, we had a very trustworthy contractor in our neighborhood check it out. He purchased, transported and installed a completely new water heater, all for $450. Never, ever repair the elements. It's always cheaper to just get a new heater.

I disagree. Unless you can swap out the $20 element yourself, which maybe isn't do-able for most people but an easy task for someone mechanically inclined and not afraid to turn off the power, replace the element, and re-connect the wires.

NO WAY. I can't believe that. Its not a tankless water heater is it? Gas or electric? Did he tell you the brand and model?

Ok, thats the other extreme. Can't imagine the water heater costing less than $300. So he made very little. Probably wanted to give you a good deal to build his base and get referrals.

Even with a gas hookup, it shouldn't cost more than $1,000.

If it is electric, it is easy enough to do yourself.

The water heater was a few months old. I didn't see a reason to replace the whole thing.

I would question your "trustworthy" contractor because he is ripping you off if you just needed a new heating element. It costs $11-$20 for 1 heating element and they often are swapped out before the end of the tank's life due to build up on hard water esepcially well water. All you need to do is drain the tank, unscrew the elements put the new one in. Make sure you get the heating element lug nut which is $5 at home depot.

Im no super do-it-yourselfer but I installed a new water heater and it was fairly easy. Home depot, a station wagon, a hand truck and some basic tools and its done. Cheaper than repairing my old gas unit. There was a little dicking around with sweating in the pipes but nothing that bad. I think it cost me 400-500 bucks for a new unit, a new hand truck, some parts and $50 for the trash removal for the old unit.

Paying 900 for a repair sounds like a rip off but that is the nature of appliances. They usually cost a lot less just to replace.

I have saved thousands going to a web site for appliance repair http://appliantology.org/forum/23-water-heaters/ I have never had to call a repair person since I found the site.
