It's been around for awhile. I remember hearing about it on Art Bells show back in the late 90's. The 2012 thing really pushed it out there.

crop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its
own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the
reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright
light, feeling pretty psyched.

You have to cover your bases. If you believe the world is going to end, and it doesn't end on 12/21, you have to have a fallback plan.
