Oakton high school being removed from Concord District
Posted by: high school mom ()
Date: June 17, 2008 04:22PM

I have heard that Oakton High School has been asked to leave the Concord District and join the National district. Oakton will cream those kids in the national district in most sports so I don't understand why this is being proposed. Does anynoe have any information on this?

Could it be part of the RD conspiracy?

The VHSL already approved a Redistricting plan for 2009-10/2010-11.

Oakton is in the Concorde with Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, Oakton, Robinson, and Westfield. On the other hand, the Liberty has nine teams, I am surprised they don't move Fairfax over to the Concorde as Fairfax seems to be D6.

WTF are you talking about? Oakton sports programs aren't any different than any other FC high school.

Where to begin........

Out of season activities-year round practices.........pupil placements for sports.....kids who live in other counties who play there........feeder teams.......pay to play arrangements.........

Ask your head football coach and asst AD if he filed for a field use permit for his Elite QB camp? Ask him if he paid the fees like everyone else has to? Not until he was caught cheating the system did he get a "bill" from FCPS.

Ask your girls basketball coach if his camp down at Longwood College violates FCPS policy? Ask him if he is allowed to pay other coaches to bring players to his private camps and clinics? Ask him if he is allowed to charge his own players to attend his private camp?

Cheaters, cheaters, cheaters, cheaters................

thank you...back in school(at oakton) we beat teams with 10x the athletic ability we had, it's all about the heart and coaching...i didn't know any high school players in this area driving BMW's that their coaches or schools bought them so...i don't know what this $$ argument is about

I don't feel good saying it but the dude is at least partly right about oakton sports...that whole thing with darrel green's son is a good place to start the accusations.

Oakton is notorious for doing whatever it takes to win-regardless of the rules. The principal and the AD look the other way, of course.

Coaches are prohibited from promoting their private businesses/camps among their players. These rules are part of their employee agreement with FCPS. They are also prohibited from compensating other coaches for "finders fees"-they cannot pay a coach to bring players to their private camp.

Just take a look at the girl's basketball coach, Fred Priester and his Basketball Place website. There is a link to his Longwood Camp-I think it is about $400 per player. It says on the brochure, that coaches who bring their players will be paid!!!

Gee, I wonder where the Oakton girls team is going this summer to camp???

Give me a break. At least admit that you guys cheat. And no, not all the schools are doing it-some are. Most schools have reputable ADs and principals and they make sure that their coaches are complying with the rules. Oakton is not one of those schools.

That's sad to hear about the girls bball team, they were state champs at least one year when I went there if I recall. That team was just straight talent - some of the best I've ever seen at that level, and most, if not all of them were known to everyone, because we had been going to school with them for years. All that imported player crap started around that time with the football team and must have manifested to the other sports.

Green's son couldn't play football worth a shit. No better than half of the other players.

You mean like Chantilly, whose varsity b-ball coach I hear is at this moment coaching a summer league team of rising Chantilly freshmen?

I doubt Oakton is the only school that breaks the rules. But it does give them a competitive edge over schools that are not practicing year round. Renner at West Springfield is another serial violator-private kicking lessons on his field, showing game film to rising 9th graders, collecting checks for their WVU team camp. He is such an egomaniac he is giving signed certificates to those who donate to his 300 club- like he is Tom Brady or somebody famous.

all four years i played ball at oakton practice started in august and ended in december every year...no year round practices...with so many students playing two, even three sports year round...how would they be able to attend basketball or football practice while playing baseball or lacrosse?

you all need to get your facts straight, i guess having the best overall female basketball player the last four years they really had to cheat. I don't think so. So Fred runs a camp, no one is forced to go there, you can make the team if you don't go to camp. You don't think there are other sport camps, get real. maybe football and lacrosse did do some recruiting but you know that goes on at all concorde district schools, you really think kids are being pupil placed for an educational class NOT!

This AP/IB placement between schools is BS. Madison has a baseball player from South Lakes who "pupil placed for AP"-yea right. West Springfield has 3 boys lacrosse players from Lee who pupil placed for AP.

What sucks is that if you pupil place into an IB school you have to be a full diploma candidate-which is quite demanding. If some dumb jock pupil places into an AP school-they can take one class.

It is a huge disadvantage to the IB schools in the sports recruitment game.

Once again, the ADs look the other way.

Big woop on Jasmine Thomas-I am sure she found her way to Oakton thru creative means. Lee girls basketball won the northern region this year-wooped Woodson HS pretty good. They don't play this year round practice as a team crap-Coach Rudy C doesn't have some private business that he extorts money from his players.

They run a clean program and they kick A**.

so big deal...

girls CC #2 in the state, boys #4 with some overall good runners
golf state champ
girls LAX state champs
boys LAX runner ups
Girls BBall 11 district champs out of the last 14
boys baseball runner ups
football state champs in 06

all these kids were recruited yea right, adn they only play one sport yea right. OHS just has good student/athletes just accept it. Oh yea and good coaches (for the most part)

And a big student enrollment tolerated by a corrupt school board that does little to even out school sizes (and gets it wrong when it redistricts).

this is legal -- south lakes and madison's head lacrosse coaches run a summer travel program for rising 8th and 9th graders. since they technically have never been enrolled in the school, rising freshmen are allowed to play.

and just as a side note, madison's coach (dewey) moved to ohio so i dont know where the program stands and if hodge will join blamey.

People shouldn't make accusations when they really don't know what is going on and what the rules allow and do not allow. The coaches that bring teams to Longwood get paid as camp counselors -- they work the camp. This is a common practice at other camps as well. And, its not just high school coaches -- AAU coaches do this too. Even if this were improper, I don't see how that helps Oakton girls' basketball. If other schools get to bring their teams to a camp with their coach out of season, then it seems to me it helps them, not Oakton.

Same goes for the Basketball place. Just go down to Hoop Magic off of route 50 and you will see several basketball trainers coaching kids during the off season. High school coaches are permitted to offer their services as well in this capacity. If you are suggesting that Oakton would pick a kid that went to his outfit over someone who was better, but didn't go, -- wouldn't that make Oakton a worse team since they are picking inferior players?

The Darrell Green's son issue was thoroughly reviewed by VHSL and they agreed that Green was properly at Oakton HS. It was reported in the Washington Post.

It's not just Oakton, so calm down and accept reality.

Madison is full of freshmen athletes this year who pupil placed out of South Lakes and, in at least one case, Marshall. Didn't help the football program much this fall but will make a big difference with boys' basketball. But, since the transfers were all justified by the students' need for an AP curriculum (sic), guess it's OK.
