I agree, they should clean up back there, I can't imagine how many rodents are having feasts behind that strip.

Judging from the positioning of the ladder trucks, I would say that there was a report of a fire in that strip center. That is our standard procedure.

Also, as I posted in the other fire department thread (yeah, I'm 'Local 2068 Comm Dude'... I just remembered that I have a login here!), it may say 'Annandale VFD' on that engine in the last photo, but I am 99.99% sure that there were only paid professionals of Fairfax County Fire & Rescue on board.

Let me guess. You refer to volunteers as "ticks" and constantly rant about how the volunteers take jobs away from the "paid guys", right?

Absolutely not. I began my firefighting career as a volunteer in Fairfax County. I do not hide that. IMHO, the way that VFDs in Fairfax County would be best utilized is as a 'farm system' for the paid Fire & Rescue Department. One fire chief in charge of the entire department, not one fire chief in charge of the paid personnel and 12 volunteer chiefs in charge of their volunteer personnel.

Calling Fairfax County a 'combination' system (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/fr/deptinfo/overview.htm) is not true. The notion of a 'combination' system is something like Spotsylvania County (among others), where volunteers are responsible for a certain time period (usually nights and weekends) and paid personnel are responsible for another (or in the case of municipalities like Prince William County, units during volunteer hours also). There are other versions of combination systems, but I see it as misleading that 95 plus percent of the apparatus marked 'volunteer' run with no volunteers at all.

I applaud systems that can run with 100% volunteer staffing. My heartache comes from volunteer systems who are not reliably providing an adequate standard of care, but to protect their 'fiefdom', they are not open to paid staffing. I'm not talking about a total paid 'takeover'... I'm talking about a paid driver, maybe two paid people at a firehouse. A combination system.

People are busy, training is lengthy and strenuous... there are hundreds of reasons why volunteering is down. Do I blame the VFD? Not if they recognize when they are not giving the citizens what they deserve on a consistent basis and make strides to remedy the situation quickly.

You can pack that volunteer vs paid rhetoric up and send it out. Let's talk facts.
