Alas, cocaine seemed to have such promise, but it became clear that the feeling of clarity, nay, even euphoria, was followed by a sinister dependence on the drug. I went from a 5% solution to a 3% solution, but even that created an addictive dependence with my patients, and frankly, myself.

When my colleague, Dr. Frankheim, started using cocaine after a painful hand infection caused when his scapel slipped during a procedure, he found that the depression when he could not regularly inject himself was worse than the pain from the bone infection.

Sadly, he ultimately shot himself with his revolver. It was a great loss to the medical community.
