Bike Path Underpass at Park St, Maple, Cedar and Gallows

Just dreaming I know but wondered what it would cost to build underpasses from the bike path to go under Park St, Maple Ave, Cedar Lane and Gallows road? It would be safer for everyone crossing those roads from the bike path. If started far enough away from those streets they could slope at a reasonable rate.

In the seven figures plus lighting costs and a fair number of PO'd drivers who are inconvenienced during the construction.

True...the days of even considering an underpass (or even a cool overpass) are long gone. There's just no money for such a project...if it were going to happen, it should have been done when the Falls Church bike overpass was built...

It's probably somewhere on the 'Hey we'd like to do this someday' list, kind of like Loudoun County has 'interchanges on Route 7 and 50' on its 'Hey we'd like to do this someday list.'

I could see someone buying a couple of nearby acres and then doing a Maple or Gallows trail overpass as a proffer.

Park and Cedar I can't see an overpass on anytime soon.

What they should do is put big ramps on both sides of the bike path so I can jump those damn roads.

Not sure how long you've been a NoVa "lifer", but this matter came to the fore some years ago (in the 1990s). It was soundly defeated, and rightly so. There is no need for either an underpass or overpass.

In response to the uncontrolled crossing issue, Vienna installed a crosswalk and a stoplight. That is sufficient. The W&OD path is not intended to be a training track for Lance Armstrong wannabees. When you get to the crosswalk, press the signal button, and then have the patience to wait the 45 seconds or so for the light to change.

Aside from the construction issues that an underpass or overpass would impose, there are also other matters to consider.
(1) Aethestics - An overpass would not be in keeping with the town character.
(2) Maintenance - An underpass might allow water to pool, trash to gather, and even some low-level crime to fester. An overpass would have different issue.
(3) Cost - Why should Vienna have to pay for the construction and subsequent upkeep of a structure that pedestrians don't need and most residents don't want? It would primarily benefit a relative few, generally self-centered, bicyclists who all too often refuse to obey traffic signs and signals anyway.

There are lot of people who needs bike paths. Biking is a healthy habit. Vienna is big on biking as is Northern Virginia in general due to support for nature. Great Idea.

To do a bike path, first develop a proposal with a small group champion. Don't start with "cost". There are many ways to handle cost factors. There is a protocol in Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for new proposals. This can be one such proposal if you are serious.
