Topic: Fairfax County invites you to a County Forum on Creating an Older Adult Friendly Community.

Conversation: This is a great topic, and there is need for affordable communications in all neighborhood. McLean Community Center is a good start, but we need similar conversation at Vienna/Oakton GMU neighborhood.

What Went Wrong
In Its Collapse, A Business Finds Hope
The Soundry community, owners, reflect on what went wrong; look toward future

There is need to have a design like the "Soundry" in Vienna again. But not strictly as a small business as was this failure as a "art and music" support culture.

I think the owners of Soundry did not have the knowledge of how to martial philanthropic support for this which Fairfax County could have helped to enable sustainance.

But the owners didn't do that based on what I have learned about the Soundry Vienna. There membership fee was rather high as they had a "business model" that really not suitable for their activiites.

I went to one of their "Art and Music Festival" that took some photos that I hope can be helpful in desiigning the "Older Adult Friendly community" on a neighborhood basis as needed such as "Vienna Soundry" facility.

Senicide or geronticide is the abandonment to death, suicide or killing of the elderly.

The case of institutionalized senicide occurring in Rome comes from a proverb stating that sixty-year-olds were to be thrown from the bridge.

The most comprehensive explanation of the tradition comes from Festus writing in the fourth century AD who provides several different beliefs of the origin of the act, including human sacrifice by ancient Roman natives, a Herculean association, and the notion that older men should not vote because they no longer provided a duty to the state.

This idea to throw older men into the river probably coincides with the last explanation given by Festus. That is, younger men did not want the older generations to overshadow their wishes and ambitions and, therefore, suggested that the old men should be thrown off the bridge, where voting took place, and not be allowed to vote.

This conversation is not yet over !

We need to talk about how to make "Senior Friendly Neighborhoods".

The well known fact is most seniors want to live at the home they have lived and not be forced to one of those "Assisted Living Apartments" as long as they can still live in the home and be able to have "alternate transport" to driving as most seniors are asked to do now due to lack of affordable "paratransit" service that exist successfully in other urban communities.

Altertnate Paratransits with "hybrid Vans" also reduce auto fumes that makes everyone's health in a negative way.

So, the issue of "Adult Friendly Community" has to do with "connectivity" and affordable daily living alternatives as this example, affordable paratransit.

If I am 80 years old, and live alone at home mostly, should I be forced to drive to get my grocery and all other needs due to lack of affordable "paratransit" service ?

Can we develop a new protocol for "Paratransit" that includes Seniors, handicapped and others who wish a better option to driving even for to grocery store or doctor's office__that is affordable ?

Many caring communities across USA have already done this. Why not Fairfax, VA ?

(Last thing you want is "Automobile Only" Option for everyday living as we now have (forget the public bus. Too inconvenient, and no one wants to wait for the next bus for another hour, specially when you are 80 years old !).

(01) Strengthen Family ties and bring partatransit on neighborhood basis.

(02) Innovative Neighborhood "Subscription Transit"

people who are in their 80's or 90's should not be forced to drive for everyday needs if they choose to live in their own home where they have spent many years past.

Paratransit Innovation Demo at Hometown USA 2014+ at Fairfax VA ?

Quesion: Why ?

One Possible Answer: When I get to be 80 years old, may be senses are not as alert as before, wouldn't it be nice to have alternate transport that's affordable (door to door) for such everyday needs as going for grocery, doctor's office, and visiting grandchildren or friends for a cup of coffee at the Mall or at McDonalds may be at the neighborhood strip mall ?

Yea, I saw a lady several years ago, 80 years old, forced to drive my herself to go to grocery store needs. She ran into a trash collection truck at a busy corner,
blood dripping from her head injustry, waiting for the ambulence to get theere when I got to the same corner !

A vivid memory ! That's when I said, this lady needs an affordable "door to door" paratransit twice a week may be at Faifax, VA !

Makse sense ?
