this book is chock full of shitting, pissing, farting, screwing, and puking. And it was written over 300 years ago! I say you should see Gargantua and Pantagruel. We'll be right back with this week's Three to See.

What's it about?

Signatures are for fags

it's one of the early satires, originally written in Middle French, in 1532. It's in two parts: one is about the giant, Gargantua, and his life and exploits, and the other is about Gargantua's son, Pantagruel. There's no central plot; the early novels didn't function the way modern novels are structured. It's really a series of vignettes, describing everything from epic drinking contests to sharp satire of religion and the politics of the day, all told in a sort of fantasy/fairytale manner. Depending on the edition you read, it is very crude and foul--lots of descriptions of bodily functions and sex acts. It's along the lines of Don Quixote, Gulliver's Travels, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy (which is a ridiculous book itself....extremely difficult to read, but rewarding and strange).
