The mazda 3 is a good looking car but is completely different from the Model 3. Nissan leaf, bmw i3, Spark are all competitors, and are all much uglier and with less range.


The model 3 competes with BMW/Merc/Audi. Quick, sexy, luxurious interior, self driving, amazing dash, great handling and realistically about $40,000 before any tax credits.

Since there are no stealerships, you can actually buy a $35,000 tesla. Unlike stealerships who never have non optioned out cars on their lots.

So let's say that Tesla manages to book sales on something like 300,000 Model 3's by 2018-2019, by delivering them all to customers. If Tesla can make $5,000 a vehicle, higher than what is typical for midsize sedans, then the company will make about $1.5 billion.

Tesla really needs to do better than this. Its cash burn is now something on the order of $400 million a quarter, according to The Wall Street Journal, and with $1.2 billion in cash on the balance sheet as of the fourth quarter of 2015, it can't sustain that burn rate for an entire year.

The Model 3 preorder (those 300,000 bookings all come with a $1,000 deposit for a total of about $300 million raised so far), however, will buy it an extra quarter, at that rate.

This sets up a nightmare scenario for Tesla. The Model 3 already looks as if it will be very successful — the most successful electric vehicle in history, based on preorders. But the cruel economics of the auto industry will make the Model 3 Tesla's least profitable vehicle. Of course, it will still have to build the Model 3, and it may even have to carve into Model S and Model X production to bring the Model 3 in on schedule.

The model 3 is not the only model it sells. 300k cars are not the only cars its going to sell and 5,000 is not the most profit it will make per vehicle.

The profit on actual delivery of all of those vehicle will buy them about 1 year.

The deposits will carry them for about 1 quarter.

Of course it includes construction costs. You think all of that is free? lol

I know that you have no clue about any of this sort of stuff but all of those costs aren't charged at once real time. They fund things like that through debt. The then have to generate enough money to cover on-going operations, to pay off that debt, and to cover immediate funding of other future costs. That's the burn rate being discussed. As it stands, they're burn though money, mostly money that they've borrowed, like crazy. And that's doing unconventional, non-GAAP crap like counting money that they borrow as "cash."

In the case of Tesla, the stock price has little to nothing to do with the actual finances of the company. It's mostly just an artificial symbol that's traded based on speculation. The stock trades at nothing anywhere near a real basis relative to it's finances. Even assuming that it would take over the world, the valuation still is very high.
