Why does Garza sit with the School Board? Doesn't this position (Superintendent) really report to the Board? She should sit to the side with the lawyers and HR and other direct reports.

If you have any knowledge "as to how this County and its agencies operate", please enlighten us with an explanation as to why the appointed Superintendent of Schools sits with the elected School Board members at Public Meetings. Why on earth would a superintendent attend those dreary meetings and be kept out until 11:00 or 12:00 at night by choice? I don't think that will happen on her new gig.

This school board operates like every other form of dysfunctional government
Each school board member has their own pet project
You play nice and vote yes to your friend's wasteful project and then it's your turn eventually to get your pork project passed
They spend taxpayer money so they don't care
The budget gets bigger and bigger until the bubble bursts

If you are a parent and not on the school board or BOS it is unlikely you will have a say in whether Garza is “DONE” or not. What makes you think you have any say in anything? It’s become pretty obvious to me as a parent and a voter that the school board doesn’t care what I say.

Our mission driven team of education, communications, technology and business professionals help teachers, leaders and schools move education forward by focusing on the right people – finding, keeping, developing and rewarding talented educators who make a difference in students’ lives. The right measures – identifying and using strategic measures to inform improvement; the right practices – supporting educators to improve their skills by responding to data and using research based instructional practices; the right messages – communicating with and engaging stakeholders to champion, implement and support change."
The Ohio Business Roundtable provided initial funding for BFK and Vanderbilt University, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Feds have contributed substantial monies since. Interesting that Vanderbilt ran the respected study that found little/no benefits to pre-K schooling.
It appears Garza will get a bump in compensation to the neighborhood of $400K - but she'll be based in Columbus Ohio.
Maybe she'll look at the success of charter schools in Boston and bring some energy to developing alternatives to our current education structure. Or maybe she'll warm the chair and make the contacts to be appointed Sec Ed in an HRC administration...

The new job was an excuse for Garza to leave. She left because she got tired of dealing with BS from School Board members. Her acting successor took himself out of consideration for the permanent job for the same reason.

I cannot support continuation of the status quo, but I can support empowering principals and teachers, taking some risks and doing some unorthodox and unconventional things. This new superintendent has to get rid of some dead wood in senior administration.

Mr. Braband (who wasn't the top choice to be Superintendent) needs to come with a new plan because what has been done in the past is not working. I am sure we all appreciate the necessity of basic educational credentials and experience, but that’s what we’ve always had with FCPS, and it hasn’t worked always. Low teacher and student morale, discipline problems and administrators not being accountable are among the issues that have been raised repeatedly.

Mr. Braband was not the preferred candidate in May when they were supposed to announce the new superintendent. Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) helped the Fairfax County School Board with finding Dr. Garza's replacement.
