America Online, LLC was a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Warner (NYSE:TWX). AOL, as they are known, currently employs about 5,000 to 7,000 people.

The company has frequent reorganizations and what could be called a "two-year layoff cycle." That is to say, every few years, AOL sheds some number of its staff -- in 2002, 700 people were let go, in 2004, 500 people were let go.

The original headquarters of America Online were in Tysons Corner.

Eventually, AOL had two main campuses in the Northern Virginia area. The first and primary campus was located in Dulles off of Route 28 on Waxpool Road. The second is located in Reston on Sunrise Valley Drive, in an unmarked red brick building. The Reston location shared a parking lot with Raytheon and Nextel/Sprint.
