Your telling the local machine that adaptivetime actually exists on the local machine. Any request for www.adaptivetime.com will be directed to the local machine and therefore blocking it. 127.0.0.1 = localhost you can try going to his site it wont work. You can redirect anything you want lets say google (ip 74.125.127.100) so if you type 74.125.127.100 yahoo.com in your hosts file yahoo.com
