Traffic ticket in herndon

Hi,
I live in town of herndon and recently got pulled over for a reason i am just going to write down.I hope some of you can help me.

I was driving towards downtown herndon on 606 (sterling road) during rush hour. I was right behind a truck (with a high roof top) blocking my view of the traffic lights at the intersection of Herndon parkway and 606, by the time i got there the light had turned yellow and i didnt stop because that was would have ended me right in the middle of the road.
unfortunately, there was a cop right behind me who pulled me over. He asked me if i knew why he stopped me. I was not sure and i asked was it because i tried to beat the red light? He answered, "well, you didnt".His answer left me confused. He took my license and registration and gave me a ticket for "fail to obey traffic light" and put "disregard red light" in the descrption.

My qustions are
My ticket is
1. is the Convenience fee which is $62 the court fee? or the court fee is in addition to the convenience fee? and how much is usually the court fee?
2. so, if i decide to prepay how much will that be?100 dollars or 162?
Is it worth the time and money to fight the ticket in the court? as i have heard NOVA courts dont drop tickets.
3. HOw much will affect my insurance? its currently $200 for one car the honda civic 2000 i have.
From your experience what you guys suggest?

Appreciate your time and advice.

Thanks

Court fee is $62 fixed Plus you will have to pay for traffic light violation
Go to court and say you are not guilty.. Make a good case. Try to lure them with your driving record if clean. In Fairfax county you will keep on getting tickets for smallest mistakes you make.. so dont avoid a chance to fight. Im telling this to u from experience.

Insurance..If you are above 25 then i would suggest go for Progressive .. they are lenient on tickets.

I hope this helps

Ditto on everything Mak87 said, EXCEPT on thing. You can't say not guilty. Not only will it just tick off the judge but technically you are because you entered an intersection without view of the traffic signal. Just plead NO CONTEST and hope for the best. If your record is clean in VA they will dramatically lower the fine but you'll still also be paying the $62 court cost. As far as insurance this is a minor violation and will hardly do anything.

On a related note... For future reference, NEVER volunteer or ask any questions when stopped by an officer!! Classic mistake you made! ALWAYS respond with, I'm not sure, and nothing more!!

Enigma is spot on.

Often judges will ask you to explain yourself if you plead Guilty or No Contest. The judge will then ask the officer for your safe driving points and if youre +4 or +5 you OUGHT to get a reduced charge.

This has worked for me three times so far.

And what Enigma said in regards to volunteering information is also true for any accident. Don't admit guilt or say you're sorry. Ask if everyone is okay in their car and exchange insurance information.
